Just want some comments on this pic...good or bad. By the way...I did not use neat image or anything like that on this photo. Taken at Dallas Zoo on 6-25-06 in Dallas, Tx.
Sony DSC F707
Thanks,

Maybe a link to the Full Size will help?
Looks like the highlights are a bit blown in favor of shadow detail, but nice composition, great colors.

I think it's a good shot but when taking a picture of such a colorful bird with great lines and texture I think a smooth dark background would be best. It would make the viewer focus more on the subject than the distracting background. The bright highlights behind the bird competes with the subject thus pulling down the strength of the overall image. |

I'm not so sure that saying "a dark background would be best" when you are shooting wildlife and obviously can't control the scene.
My tip to you would be to just use a larger aperture to blur the bg more so that the bird stands out from it.
I like the detail on the bird a lot, the highlights on the bird are not blown out, only the rocks are.
I would also like to see the birds eye in the upper left corner with more of the birds body going diagonal to the bottom right...that would have covered more of the distracting bg.
Overall I'd say that this shot would be great with a little recomposition...to quickly fix it I would square crop it - would be the perfect crop IMO...
Here is an example of square crop with shallower DOF...

That yellow seeems way too bright/satured, did you run a filter of some sort on this photo?
You maintainded great detail in the face though..

I like the overly vivid colors, they seem emotive and tropical to me. I agree that the square crop would look best, would give this shot even more impact. Good work, I really like it. |
