Once you save the image over the original you affect the FILESYSTEM date which will not match the EXIM file date. Reverting WILL NOT revert the FILESYSTEM date. This makes your file invalid. DQ.
YOU MUST HAVE AN UNTOUCHED COPY. No if's, ands, or buts.
Where's mk? This should be added to the FAQ! lol |
shouldn't give a rats behind about the file system date
only the EXIF date
camera is always correct but not necessaly the computer .. |

Originally posted by davidus428: when i was using my D100, I always download files from CF using Nikon View. I have been doing this primarily to organize my filing and naming of files.
I have sent proofs in the past using my Original Jpegs from Nikon View (transfered through Nikon transfer)and were approved here in DPC.
Now that I am using a new D200, I'm using Picture Project to download photos into my computer. This is the software that comes with the package. Nikon View doesnt work with D200(incidentally, my version of Nikon View v.6.0 also doesn't work with my D70 files).
I know how to drag files and folders directly from my CF to the PC but I would like to maintain my filing and renaming system which I have been using for 3 years. Dragging to PC doesn't fix this and is not very organized. The extra step of renaming also won't be practical since I usually download photos to my PC and my Mac maintaining the same names using PictureProject.
That is my dilemma now. Can anyone help me with this? I don't have Nikon Capture. I'm not even sure if the RAW file I sent just now carry with it the original EXIF or not.
In my Xp explorer, when i click Properties, I can see the info for the Date when Picture was Taken and the Camera Model. Does this help validate the photo?
thanks again for helping out. |
i used Picture Project a couple time last Jan /
dumped it & am still using Nikon Capture for both the D200 & D100
it does not change the EXIF dates or otherwise muck withthe files even after saving
the 'shoot' dates are always original.
Some settings do change but you can revert.
both of my ribbons were validated with Nikon Capture 'revert to original'
i do NOT save original files, i edit almost 100% of my files the same way
i am currently saving 2dvd's a month in images - that isn't going to suddenly double because DPC doesn't recognize "reverted to original" files

I disagree completely. How would you test if the original file has been altered? You need 2 dates to compare. How accurate the clocks on the camera and computer is irrelevant as long as the computer hasn't touched the file.
If the filesystem date (created by the camera BTW and saved on a FAT32 filesystem partition on the SD/CF/whatever memory card) DOES NOT match the EXIF date (also created by the camera), the file has been altered in some way. Invalid. DQ.
Not to drone on about it, but the original MUST be untouched. The filesystem date matching the EXIF date is one measure of if it has been touched. |

Here's a quick overview of some of the RAW vs. JPEG validity questions, and also a short discussion of dates.
- A RAW file, at least today, is a valid original (if it is the same image, of course!) even if it has a stamp from transfer software. The RAW data cannot be edited, only converted differently. If the EXIF or other metadata shows evidence of date tampering, a RAW file could be rejected as an original even if it is otherwise valid.
- A JPEG file with evidence that it was saved out of transfer software will be rejected as an original. Since a JPEG file can be edited, the stamp from the transfer software makes it impossible to determine whether the as-shot original looked anything like the submission, therefore we can't validate :-(
- Bottom line, if you're shooting RAW, you must submit the RAW file for validation. If shooting RAW+JPEG, either will do, but don't use transfer software on the JPEG! If shooting JPEG, be *very* careful to save originals without modification, including avoiding of resaving by transfer software.
- Regarding dates, there are anywhere from one to three dates recorded in EXIF, as well as the file system date, which is external to the file. Not all cameras record all date/time stamps, but all at least record the "Date/Time Original" or equivalent. This date/time, at very least, *must* be within the challenge dates/times as measured by the server. We assume that the camera's date/time is set to the local timezone where you live, and we'll compensate accordingly when validating. |
