This is not photo related, but I know someone here knows the answer, and so far I've had no luck....
I have a machine running Windows 2000, which has IE on it (as well as Firebird; yes, the old firefox, it's an older machine not kept up to date).
I have someone using it to do some data editing for me. They are using a program which does a system call to run a program. The call is simply a file name, e.g.,
x:\files\example.xml
Normally, this would use the systems association for .xml files. If you go to windows explorer, and click the file name x:\files\example.xml, it opens XMetal, which is the default association for xml files. But on this system, when you execute the program through the system call, it brings up the browser instead of XMetal. This same call works fine on my XP Pro machine.
So what kind of association is doing that on the Windows 2000 machine? Where can I modify this association in the registry or elswhere? We need it to open XMetal, not the browser!

Can't you do a right click > Open with > XMetal? There should be a box that you can check that says "Always use this program to open this type of file" that you can check. If you want it to open with a different program, you can always do the right click > Open with > whatever you want.
Edit: Haha, beat you all. :P Usually doesn't happen this way. :)

Right click the file, then choose "Open With" and browse to your program (excel?). There should be a check box there to "Always open with this program" or something like that.
Edit: too slow

Right click on an xml file, choose Properties. Up at the top, it says Opens With:...click on the change button and select the program you want that file type to open with.
(Holy molasses.)

Thanks, we had tried that, and the default association is already XMetal.
We even tried setting the association back to the default, then resetting it to XMetal.
This setting does not appear to be the one used on this system when it comes to XML files at least. (Though like I said, it works fine when you double click from Windows explorer. Just not when you do a "exec" call and give only a data file name.)
Could it be somewhere in mime settings?
Note that when we changed the default browser to firebird, the same thing happens, except now the XML file loads in firebird. So it would have to be a system level setting.
Are there system level mime settings?

| I think MickNewton is a programmer or something similar, and a helluva nice guy. Maybe he could answer this for you. |

in explorer -
Tools - Folder Options - File Types - type xml on the keyboard - should highlight XML file type - click 'Change' then choose the app from there, it will change permanently to this app (or until you install another app that takes control over it) |
