Nineteen year old here who loves photography. To keep it short, I've had a passion for a while and have used my limited tutor-based skills to photograph. I want to take the next step, in what I've learned the most reliable method of learning is, and ask a forum of extremely talented enthusiasts. By chance I saw your site and signed up for the free membership to asses how much being a part of this community can help me.
I've been reading the forums, scouring the site and all that jazz, but aside from entering a contest I don't see any subtle ways of submiting a few photos and seeking general and eventually specific advice. I have a month in California working before I start on a six month trip on which I will keep my camera and intend to photograph as I go along, so before I head off I wanted to suck the wisdom of the boards up as fast as I can.

welcome :) enjoy the ride and stay away from the cheeseman :)

seriously, let's start the learning process shall we?

Well, there is a way - you become a member, and you get 50MB of portfolio space.

Otherwise, you can find a free photo sharing web site, (plenty of these around on the WWW), learn a couple of forum codes, and post thumbnails with links to your pics hosted elsewhere. Quite a few people do that here.
But then you won't get your comments next to the image as if it were a challenge entry. You will however get comments in the forums, if you post the photo under the individual photograph discussion section.

Welcome!

As a registered user you don't have a portfolio here to upload pics to, but if you have them somewhere else such as photobucket, you're welcome to start a thread, stick in links to a few of them, and ask for comments and critiques. It always helps if there's something specific you'd like advice on. Eg, "This shot seems flat to me, no matter what I do. Suggestions?"

Don't be afraid to ask questions, either. Folks here love to share their knowledge and experience :)

And above all..... have fun!

eta; Sheesh, I thought I was gonna get to be the first to answer, but I evidently type too slow! (or maybe just THINK too slow?)

Welcome Jay. In answer to your question there are two ways to get critique/comments on your work, the first is to sign up to a free image hosting site and link your images in a thread here but, by far the best way is to sign up as a full member and link directly to your dpc portfolio images (I'll guarantee they will be the best $'s you spend on photography).

Welcome Jay :-)
Ditto what srdanz said. Also, you can take a look through the challenge histories, study the good shots, take a look at comments left on entries, you can glean some knowledge that way. Also, if you havn't already checked them out, there are some great tutorials and 'how'd they do that' write ups on the site. They are under 'Learn' on the menu bar across the top of the home page. And, don't be afraid to ask specific questions you may come up with in the forums. There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks on here that are usually more than willing to help out and share some knowledge and experience.

And most importantly, have fun and shoot a LOT!
:-)

hey dude,

welcome to the maddness.

even if you don't become a member which will suck your life away while you mindlessly enjoy clicking the update button to find your score shockingly hasn't bugged a bit since last second, but it sure will in the next and then you'll win and get a beautiful blue.....Click!

you might try checking out the "learn" area next to DPCprints and help in the upper blue (love that color) bar.

there's some nice info packed away in the Tutorials and "How'd They Do That?"...just click, click, click. sorry lost focus..but i'm sure the score will change. just hang on....(its a member thing ;O) )

_bran(there's this button that you press and the hours just wiz away)do_

Hey fotodude, what exactly does bran do and why do you get so excited about it? I am familiar with it's nutritive abilities, and that's pretty good but..... ;)

Step 1, make your progress in steps. Work on one thing at a time and start from the ground up... Composition, light balance (contrast and flow) and color balance are a few great places to start...

Step 2, get a membership. it's very affordable and the cool thing is that you can get COMMENTS...

Step 3, decide how much time you have and choose a challenge to enter... I guarantee that you will learn a lot each time you enter..

Step 4, find ways to learn that aren't dependent on voting... The voting will tell you something about your picture, but there are more important things to learn...

Step 5, try to give as much as you take. You will find that you receive more that way anyhow... and the comments that you get that way are often far more in-depth and helpful than any other comments you might get...

Step 6, have a thick skin about it and welcome negative, but constructive comments... and actually give them all at least a few moments to consider...

Step 7, take a lot of pictures, but think before you take them. And after.

Okay, you've convinced me to sign up, which I tried, but unfortunately on the Registration page it says in red 'This transaction cannot be processed'. I'm paying via Visa and I've tripled checked the information. Unfortunately the money comes before the learning, can anyone help?

All finished and registered. Thanks for the advice and I'll be posting some of my newly created portfolio in a moment!

Congrats and welcome. Read the forums, lots of people ask the same questions so many of yours will be answered before you even think of them. Enjoy! :)

Remember, to read all the threads, and look at some "portfolios", as well, as there is an amazeing amount of talented people on this site.

Well glad you got in. Next time you have a problem with the payment processing, the best thing to do is call tha bank, ask for an increased credit limit and then send me your credit card and I will take care of everything from there. I'm here to help. ;-)

Have fun.
