I think it was Australia vs Croatia.

Quite correct. Australia, not the USA. Sometimes I confuse all the non-football playing countries... (i.e. the soccer playing countries)

Not sure if that counts. Not if calcio is the only word for football in Italian...

I read in one of online newspaper articles, though paraphrasing, that it's difficult for a team to play with ten men - but Italy are quite accustomed to it.
In one of the Japanese nespapers there was a photo of the penalty area incident, after the fact - the Australian player is looking at the referee, the referee is pointing to the spot. The Italian player is still on his knees, but he's doing what the Japanese call a "gatsu pose" - both fists clenched in a victory salute. I bet the Italian player was thinking, "Great! I pulled that one off - the ref fell for it completely."

That's sports, especially football. Every single team does it unfortunately, INCLUDING Australia who after the call did not go their way yesterday claim innocence and talk about how fair they are on the pitch, as if no one on their team had ever done the same thing.

I actually think the Australian Team handled the situation with dignity and grace and I was very proud that they didn’t carry on over the call. Now imagine how the Italian team would have acted if that call went against them??
