When people who aren't very photo knowledgeable ask,
"oh that is a nice image, did you edit it, or did you change it in Photoshop" what is your response?
I get frustrated because people ask these questions, and I feel they are asking, did you TAKE that nice photo or did you make it and change it and CHEAT in Photoshop. I feel that most things done in Photoshop could be done in a darkroom, and also that people thing that when using Photoshop you cheat, and ones pictures aren't REALLY that good otherwise.
Anyhow, what is your response to that question?

Most people know that I adjust my photos in Photoshop, which has been part of my workflow since about 1991, so I just explain what I did. Most people don't seem to mind my improving the original capture.
Basically, I think nothing is "cheating" unless you are a forensic photographer shooting evidentiary pictures ... |

Perhaps they are curious as to how you got the effect. Most of what I've learned here is by emulating what other photographers have done.
Of course I'm of the school that Photoshop is not considered "CHEATING". |

I hear it from my boyfriend all the time, "Oh, you must have Photoshopped that."
99% it's true! But then I have to pull up the original and be like LOOK THE ORIGINAL WASN'T TERRIBLE I JUST MADE IT BETTER D:

I've started to interpret that question as "did you add oro take anything away?". If my editing would qualify under advanced rules, I just answer the question with "no".

Answer: Photoshop, of course. Why? Do you prefer binary code?
Seriously, it's becoming less of an issue. Most people who are asking these days seem to want to know your computer workflow and techniques. The only real issue for me is how much time and patience I have to explain things to them. |

Well, why NOT Photoshop it?
I don't believe that ANY digital image can't be improved upon in software, especially as a digital image that isn't "stepped on" by added contrast, sharpness, stauration, etc in-camera, is going to be somewhat flat and not as sharp/clear as it could be.
Here is food for thought:
Why NOT Photoshop? Our brain "Photoshops" everything we see. What we "see" is processed info, not as it really is. I don't think a camera has ever been built to date, nor ever will be, that can capture a scene as we "see it", or as we think we see it. If anyone doubts that, stand in the middle of a room and look out a window into the bright outside. Funny, but we can still see a lot of detail inside in the shadows.
Talk about live-time HDR processing we have going on in our brains.... |

I'd ask if the person if they'd ever heard of a certain respected Renaissance artist, and in particular this quotation:
I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.
--Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475 - 1564)
I'd then say that pressing the shutter is like quarrying a piece of marble, while the print is the angel.
It is conceptually identical but less-used than the musical analogy atrributed to Ansel Adams, that the "negative" (shutter-click) is the written score, while the print is the virtuoso performance. |

I think people are just jealous because they don't know how to use Photoshop and their digital photos show it!

You can apply that to the bokeh challenge and replace "camera" with "lens". :P |
