Well, here's something interesting I learned today. In Iceland peoples surnames are formed by their fathers first name + 'son' or 'daughter'(dóttir) So Icelanders are usually referred to by their first name only.

I read this on a Bjork wikipedia article, which lead me to this wiki;

//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_name

Thanks, I never knew that and found the wiki article really interesting. I know that surnames are derived differently (to what I am accustomed to) in many parts of the world and that naming conventions, in terms of how people prefer to be addressed, are also very different.

that is one of the most fascinating things I've read!

there is a good reason for this, we like to be known for what WE do, not for what our fathers or forefathers did..

if Jeffrey Dahmer had a son, I don't think he would like to be known for what his father did ;)

in the old days, centuries before we found America ( yes Icelanders found America Centuies before Columbus ) we were Vikings, and we were fierce, we killed a lot of people both Icelanders and foreigners, and we wanted people to know who did it, not what family did it :)

the biggest fighters of that time are well known by all Icelanders, and even Hollywood has made a movie about the old Icelandic Vikings :)

Wow....I had no idea.....so if I was icelandic my name could've been:

Colette Dennisdottir or Colette Barbaradottir

depending on which parent I wanted to take..or which parent chose the last name?

I had no idea...I love reading this kind of stuff and finding out new things!

The vast majority of Iceland last names carry the name of the father, but in some cases the mother's name is used, for various reasons. Sometimes either the child or legal parent wishes to end social ties with the father. Some feminists use it as a social statement, and others yet simply choose it as a matter of style and nothing more. In all of these cases, the convention is entirely the same. Fjalar, the son of Bryndís, will have the full name of Fjalar Bryndísarson (literally meaning "the son of Bryndís").

From the Wiki ;-) Very interesting!

I would be "Hanneke Peterdottir"
Nice :D

So if I move to Iceland (or if she moves to Iceland, rather) My daughter would be "Martine Bearmusicdottir"? Boggles the mind...

actually it would be Colette Dennisdaughter or Colette Barbaradaughter since you don't live in Iceland, if the Icelandic name system would be in USA

so both of your kids are danielson? I'm assuming, using wikipedia as a reference, that most people take the father's name?
