I don't know what's going wrong, but Safari (and sometimes mail) crashes. It doesn't matter where I am surfing or what I'm doing, it just does.

Any ideas of what's wrong?

WHAT? A Macintosh is crashing? They don't do that! Haven't you seen the commercials?
06/26/2006 04:53:27 PM · #3
mine does.... :(

the window just pops away.

edit to add:

new hardware added since the problems started:

1 gig RAM (2gig total)
Wacom tablet
USB hub

some chance this is a problem? I zapped the PRAM..

hmm not sure what it could be maybe try selecting empty cache from the first menu in safari. My safari only crashes on one website so yea I stay off the website in safari. Also it could be your cookies or a bad cookie in safari.

Sucks to erase them all cause then you have to log in to all of your favorite sites again or you can just go throught the long list of cookies and delete ones you dont want or care about.

try one or both of those options and see if it helps

Is it just the application or the entire OS?

Usually sudden crashes are a sign of bad RAM.

Did you recently add memory? If you have 2 SIMM modules installed you can remove one and see if it still crashes.

Also, check software update int he System panel and make sure you have the latest updates.

Other than that I would need to know more about what Mac you have and the situation around the crashes.

I'll bet it's the RAM.

Try removing the new RAM and see if it still crashes. If not, return the RAm for a new one.

@ scarbrd:
only the application, yes.
bad RAM was one thing I thought about too. Gonna check that out tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me!

@ digitalpins: just erased everything (cookies etc). sucks, but might work ;) thanks to you too for the advice.

the only problem is that the problem is NOT consequent.

sometimes it happens when I'm scrolling, sometimes it happens when I hit the "back" button... aaaargh!

Try downloading Camino from mozilla.org and see if the same thing happens. It will import your Safari bookmarks.

I've only seen repeated Safari crashes under two circumstances: bad RAM or bad RAM slot, or a particular website that doesn't "behave".

your Mac has cought a Virus called Microsoft... you probably have some Microsoft programs installed like MSN or Office..

intended as a joke... even though M$ does suck on a mac ;)

ok, switched memory (2x V3,3) and now I know that was the problem. My Mac is much more faster now!

Thanks for helping me out guys, you rock!

Is Safari crashing randomly, or when you try to do something specific (e.g., accessing the same web page)?

You could delete any Safari .plist files you find. These files are like pref files and are re-created by the app when it opens and doesn't find them. Don't actually delete them, but just move to the desktop (or some other place) and then launch Safari and see if the behavior continues.

Find the .plist files with spotlight, just make sure the only one(s) you delete are clearly associated with Safari (e.g., having "safari" as part of the name.

permissions is something you should repair sort of often, especially if processing lots of photos and certainly after installing new software.
go to "disk utility"
click on your 'hard drive"
click "repair disk persmissions"

takes about 2-3 minutes and done close window,
I would restart if you have been having lots of problems, but otherwise do not bother.

do this whenever you install new software and I do it about one or 2x month (some do it monthly)
it is like having a secretary organize your files

from the apple tech folks it is something that keeps your baby running smooth

in the Applications folder, there is a folder called Utilities. Disk utility is in there.

Another way to get there, From Finder there is a top menu for Go To -> Applications -> Utilities

Done. That was a long list!

Also found the task-manager (don't know if that's the right word)

Another kiss for you? :P
