Well I sucked wind again. I have been off so much, but I entered this challenge before I bumped myself down to vote only. I received a comment early on that I should have inverted my image. So I decided to do it after the challenge. I hope that it would have done better if I had done that in the first place. Here are the two images.

I did a b/w version of my entry - it's a lot more desolate but part of the reason I took the original shot was the beautiful colours and I thought it would be a bit cliche of me to enter a b/w version simply because it was a desolation challenge.

So, what do you reckon? Should I have taken Dr Achoo's advide and avoided cyan or do you prefer the colour version?

A lot of people weren't sure how my photo met the challenge. So here is the photo and how it meets the challenge.



Desolation:

1: the state of being decayed or destroyed
2: a bleak and desolate atmosphere
3: sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned
4: an event that results in total destruction

Albeit an ugly photo...it does meet definitions 1 and 4. I was actually more surprised by the 6 and 7's I got. I expected more 4 and 5's. I'm glad my image did make an impact on people although it finished rather low.

I like the color version. I think the colors may be too vibrant, though, for the challenge. As a photo, it is beautiful as it is.

I had this in but pulled it, I wasn't happy with my post processing. The original had a beautiful blue sky and green grass and I didn't think that fit the theme very well.

I didn't get too many comments - so any ideas on how to improve this would be appreciated.

I like the color version - on first look it doesn't look like desolation but the phrase desolate landscape pops into mind some time later even if it is beautiful. I gave you extra points for managing to make desolation pretty.

Edit: I think it's the sky - in the BW its all washed out and doesn't add to the image. Also too contrasty ?.

I think so. the ivy growing makes it apparent that the place hasnt been used in a while.

I'm not unhappy about the placement I got for Des, but this is one I probably should have chosen. I really had just to many to choose from.

I did many different processed versions of this (i'll post a few later) but I thought this was best.

for the record that is me in the alley. I know some people get mad at photographing homeless people. as a side story, to the left down there is a door. it was busted out and the room was pitch black. if I were shooting a horror movie that is where I would start. I was pretty freaked out so I didn't try too many poses:)

With it, I received my highest score so far! :) So I'm thrilled. I did receive a lot of great comments on it, and because of that and because this literally was a last minute submission (I submitted it 3 minutes before the deadline, and had no time to work on it any further), I wanted to see how much more I could improve upon it.

Here's my edited version:


I like the darkening (which so many suggested). I'm not so sure about the crop of the ceiling, though. I'm thinking either I should have left it as it was, or gone even more extreme with it. Anyone have thoughts on this or anything else?

I had this one in and then pulled it. I wasn't quite pleased with it, thought it was a bit of a stretch and didn't want 3 butterfly entries in a row.
