I took this a few months ago, and while I think I have the raw material for a really nice finished shot, I just can't figure out what to do with it, beginning with the best way to crop it. A natural assumption would be to put the sun 1/3 from the right and 1/3 from the top, but I'm not convinced that's really the focal point, as opposed to something in the branches.

Any ideas?

The shot in my portfolio is much smaller than the original, so if you'd like to play with the original, let me know.

Thanks!

I wouldn't do anything to this shot. In my opinion, there is nothing exciting about this and there are no features that catch the eye, rather than the extremely harsh sun.

I would delete this and then go reshoot another scene that is similar, making sure that you photograph an actual subject, rather than a blown out sun and hidden scenery.

Perhaps the scene you saw with your eyes was exciting, but the scene is not properly exposed and is therefore ruined...it looks like you are more than 2 or 3 stops away from properly exposing the branches/trees but even in RAW that is going to add a ton of artifacts to your image. I would trash it and try again.

Only thing I could think to do was to add some color to it. Was a good way to play around with adding a new layer of color, which I've never really done before. I also cropped off some of the dark area and cloned out the highlights/reflections in the bottom.

Kteach, I rather like the colouring.

A quick go at fiddling with it on a slow Sunday afternoon

Nice try at a hard to capture moment. I cropped out some of the dead black space on the bottom and just added a filter to change the black and white.

Here's another try.

Thanks, folks!

To the first commenter: do you have any suggestions for how to shoot a sun setting behind trees? I thought that was a pretty interesting subject, not the cars in the parking lot in front of the trees. The silhouettes when blown up look cool. Of course, that's my opinion.

It's a tough lighting situation, so any suggestions on how to do it better are appreciated!
