Anyone know of any free/cheap calibration software packages? OR...do you have one that you recommend, regardless of price. Is there an industry standard?

In my view, software alone won't do an excellent job of monitor calibration because it can't measure the light your monitor produces (which changes as it ages) and it won't adjust your monitor for ambient light.

I use a hardware/software product from Pantone called Huey ($89 retail) which does both and which I like for ease of use and effectiveness.

If you have Adobe Photoshop, you do have Adobe Gamma installed on your computer and can use it to eyeball callibration.

But, Dr.Confuser is correct, really the only sure way to get good calibration is a software/hardware combo.

The Pantone Huey gets good reviews and is one of the least expensive models on the market.

i am not sure i totally understand why a monitor calibrator is so much better than eyeballing it.

hmm well now i am a little 'up in the air' after looking at the prices for macbeth colour charts. You can spent $280 for a piece of paper with colors on it :S... SO MUCH???? BHPhoto Video link

anyhow wouldn't it work good, maybe better to have a color chart of some sort.

Put those colors on the screen (with photoshop for example), and make them match. Then print something out to get your printed calibrated at the same time. All three things should match. HOWEVER, after looking at the price of that colour chart, I think a monitor calibrating 'machine' might be a cheaper alternative.
