I don't know if i am too strict or not, but I find it very rare that I give out a 10 in a challenge. I think in 7 or 8 challenges I may have given out 2. Is this wrong of me???

What you give out is your choice. But just try to be fair and honest...nobody could ask more than that.

Your vote, use it how you like.

On our scale of 1-10, the actual average is 5.5.
Your average cast is only just over 5, so you are saying that the photos on DPC are below average.

Do you really feel that is true?

I'm not totally sure, but I think i usually give out at least one. Some challenges just aren't that great in the quality sometimes.

But hey, ita all evens out, just try not to be overly harsh, it's bad karma or some crap. Though, true karma (not the western version) just means fullfilling your purpose, so maybe you were simply supposed to vote low.

I participate at times at another site and their voting is different - you pic 10 favorites and rank them 1-10. then your #1 gets 10 points, #2, 9 points, etc. most points wins. MUCH easier IMO.

SO to follow that some line of thinking, there not need be an image worthy of a vote of 1, although there will be an image in last place, whatever YOU think is the best image should get a 10.

It may not be the best image you've ever seen, or even seen today - but it you think it's the best image in this challenge then give it a 10!

I keep trying that, but my candidates keep losing anyway. perhaps my poison vote should be used to sabotage the other side! ;)

But then there is potential that some photos get absolutely nothing? I'd be a bit sad about that... I'd rather get a 1.0 for my effort, than nothing...

I don't know i usualy have a format now, it goes like this; my baseline is a 5-6 so if it meets challenge and nothing more, 5, a little more but no wow factor 6, 7 and 8's are special, i really enjoy them, 9's i would purchase and 10's redifine my perspection of the challenge. 4's tried but just didn't do it for me or it was a convienant pic that you entered cause it may have fit 3's and 2's just were technically flawed and/or their subject matter offended me, and 1 has both, offensive subject matter and poor techincal
there's my scale

My first time through I give out 4's and 6's, but no 5's. Its either below average or above average. On the 2nd and 3rd passes I upgrade the 6's, but not the 4's. I also don't give anything less than 4. Not giving out 5's seems to force me into making the decision about the quality of the photo.

I know I tend to give out higher scores to wildlife shots, but that is what I enjoy, and I know how challenging it can be.

There must be in every challenge a photo you can pick to say, of all these photos this one comes closest to achieving the challenge. By not giving a 10 to that photo, all you've done is failed to express yourself.

when I first started here, I gave out a lot of 5's, with a few that I really liked scoring higher. As I'm learning, I'm doing a better job of identifying what makes a photo really good, (imho) and what doesn't, and it's becoming easier to rank them, and differetiate between a 5, a 6, a 7 etc. I still don't give very many 10's, just because that says 'perfect' to me. I'm rethinking my voting strategy, though.

I have only given out 6 10's since I joined in April 2003. To me 10 is near perfection.
At the end of the day it is what YOU perceive is worth a 10, we all look at photos differently.

If I were to guess, this is how my voting breaks down per 100 entries:

10 - 2-3%
9 - 3-4%
8 - 4-5%
7 - 10%
6 - 20%
5 - 35%
4 - 20%
1-3 - 3%

Hmmm. I think I may be giving out too many 8s, 9s and 10s, and not many 5s or 6s. But, for the most part, I'm just so darned impressed I can't help myself!

My voting has been going progressively down. I am voting based on what I have received in votes for similar flaws, subject material etc. I look at the image, say to myself, what would they give me, then vote accordingly. Maybe it is wrong, but that is how I vote the majority of images. There are those that really stick with me, though, and I vote higher on those. Some of things I vote higher scores on is clarity of image, saturation, difficulty in acquiring the shot, lighting (how hard would it be to get the image exposed correctly) and creativity. My 10's are often, and I will admit it, more along the artistic venue. These shots do not do well overall, but they are the ones that get 10's from me.

One of the ones I voted 10 on that didn't do as well as it should is Hollow by SJCarter.

I will usually give 1-3 10's. My hardline is pretty much a 4 and only very rarely do I go below that. I am more likely to give a 10 than a 1 or 2. Just weird like that.
06/24/2006 04:01:53 PM · #18
In "Indulgence" I only gave one photo over a 6, and that was a picture of me! But that was an amazingly uninspired challenge. There are usually half a dozen or so pictures that I just adore, and then it's a matter of ranking them with 10s, 9s, and 8s.

Here is my voting habit of sorts.

If it's going to be hard for me to give out one end of the scale it should be equally as hard to give out the other end of the of the scale. Of course there has been challenges that I have given out many high scores ( 9 or 10's) and a lot of challenges I do not give less than a 4.

To add to what Beetle says here, the theoretical average is 5.5, but in reality we have been voting around 5.1 in open challenges and 5.5 in member challenges. The chart below needs to be updated but I'm sure the averages won't change much.
