I have been trying to figure out how to use this flash for just fill and I just can't seem to work it out. Also, I shoot mostly in Av mode and, when set the camera is set to Av mode and the flash is on, the camera selects the shutter speed based on the background which is very slow, even in daylight. It's just weird, but maybe it's because I'm not really used to using flash. Is this normal for all flash guns or am I missing something?

I have some trouble using my flash in manual mode, so I usually just set my camera to P, and let it do as it pleases.

I've had to get used to adjusting the flash EV instead of the camera for different ceiling heights, and using the lightsphere when the ceiling is just too high. I love to bounce the flash off of the corners of the ceiling too, makes for nice, soft side lighting.

That seems normal for fill flash. In Av mode, the camera/flash combination chooses a shutter speed that, along with the dialed-in aperture exposes the background properly (i.e. the area outside the centre portion of the frame). The flash should then fill in the darker areas of the subject at or near the centre of the frame. You can then play with the relative exposures of background and subject by using exposure compensation in the case of the background and flash exposure compensation in the case of the subject. If the shutter speed is a little too low for your liking, you could increase ISO to compensate. The key to remember is that the camera is attempting to get all parts of the frame exposed correctly. The shutter speed might, in fact, be slightly faster than without the flash, as the camera should, in theory, not be trying too hard to expose correctly for the subject.

Yeah, what AJAger said... dude sure is knowledgeable for a guy who shoots a SiPix Blink.. :)

In my 30D manual, on the first page of the Flash section (p. 102, probably not the same in the 20D manual), it describes how different modes use the flash differently...

There is a Custom Function (3 on my camera) to take the slow shutter sync off... The default on this camera is slow shutter sync on...

On my S2 IS, I seem to recall that the default is slow shutter sync off... I kinda forget though...

Have you any idea of how technologically advanced that camera really is? ;)

Its C.Function 3 on the 350D also - "flash sync speed in AV mode"

Well, you know what they say... It's not the camera that takes the picture, it's the photographer... So probably pretty advanced... ;)

You need to understand how canon flash works.
the basics:

In Av and Tv modes if total EV is over 10, then the flash is AUTOMATICALLY fill flash. The camera sets the exposure to properly expose for the ambient light. (the BG will look normal) Below that light level (roughly normal to dim indoor room at night) then the camera converts to using the flash as the main light source (as it does in P mode always) The BG may go black.

see
//photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index2.html#flashmodes
(you can read the whole thing at //photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/#faq1 )
and also see

On Canon using P mode will never get fill flash - it's the one mode that won't do it (unless by luck).

On a canon system, you can adjust flash exp comp on the flash or body - both work the same. the flash unit setting will overide the body setting, so if you find it's not working on the body, check the flash for exp comp.
