OS X is based on UNIX, so it will certainly take avantage of all available RAM. That said, I don't notice any appreciable diffference in Photoshop between my home Mac (1GB RAM) and my office workstation (3.5GB RAM). Running Linux on a Mac is like towing a fully-loaded Jeep with a stripped-down Jeep... you could do it, but why would you? |
Because it just looks *so* cool when it's done like this;
//youtube.com/watch?v=gE1XQyT_IbA
(Apple Macbook running OSX, but watch what happens at 32 seconds into the video) |
That is wicked cool! |

Yeah, Vista is near. Good advice would be to either wait for Vista to be introduced and get a machine with it pre-installed or at least make sure your new machine meets recommended specs for Vista.

Riiiiiiight. That's like equating a Zen MP3 player to an iPod- same category, but totally different leagues. |

Originally posted by ursula: And another question, just to make sure: If I have a Mac, and the rest of the family has PCs (and I have my old Toshiba still, because I like it), can I still run the wireless internet router the same way I have it now? In other words - the router doesn't break if not all computers are the same operating system, right?
Would that be the same for printers also? In other words, can the same printer be used for both a Mac and a PC?
(Now you all know how terribly dumb I am at this) |
I didn't see this addressed earlier. I've got a mostly pc network with a couple macs and have run into a couple snags - nothing major.
All your computers should be able to use the wireless - though there might be some tricks in configuring wireless security (depending on your wireless setup). You can get everything to work by entering in the key directly (rather than a pass-phrase) on all machines.
File sharing - it is possible to share files between machines - when going between mac and windows, I've found it's a lot easier to be on the mac and reading/writing to pc shares rather than the other way around.
Printers - as was said above - it depends. I've got an HP inkjet that is shared off of a windows machine - my mac can print to it just fine. I have an Olympus p400 shared off the same machine that my mac can't seem to get to run.
I'm not trying to make it sound more difficult than it is - the "it just works" mac slogan is pretty accurate. I'm sure that you can be 100% integrated in short order. |
