As it is now, for your vote to count you have to vote on 20% or more of the images.

I think there shold be a mandatory minimum of comments as well - 5% to start, maybe 10%. Or else you're vote does not count.

Sure, a lot fo them would be pointless comments - but right now that'd be better than no comments, or 'good', 'great' and 'a 10!'.

Are we more of a competition site, or educational?

I second the motion as I believe that this is as much an educational site as it is a competition site. It has certainly helped me and my ever worsening scores are testimony to this.

Seriously, this is a good idea.

What's to people from posting:

The quality of comments will not go up.

Yea, I have to agree with Di, scalvert and others...

I don't think you'll see an improvement in the quality of comments given and you might just upset enough of the voters to in turn not vote, effecting the sight all together.

Personaly I think its a bad idea.

I like the idea, but see how it would turn some people away from voting at all. Perhaps there's a way to achieve a happy medium?

What if instead of requiring comments on a certain percentage of the photos submitted to a challenge, a fixed number of comments was required instead? Something small, like 5. Or even 3. Small enough so that people who vote without commenting will not feel put upon, but enough so that as a whole, the number of comments provided for any given challenge would increase.

Yes, I'm sure there would be people who just filled in the obligatory 3 comments with nonsense, but I don't think it would stop anyone from voting if the number was small enough. And also, maybe, just maybe, it would get some folks who never comment to start to enjoy commenting and do it more than what was "required", as nominal as that number might be. Sort of just enough of a "try it, you'll like it" nudge.

Makes sense?

Liz

If you want more/better comments, I suggest sending a PM to every commentor saying "Thank you for your comment on my entry in the ____ Challenge ..." plus whatever else you want to add (I usually put a link to the photo page too).

Even better would be if the admins would put a PM button or a "Thank this Commentor" button right there in the thread, which would go straight to the compose-PM field, allowing optional bypassing of a person's profile page.

You can create a clickable link in a PM?
06/23/2006 02:22:12 PM · #13
That depends more on how your email is set up but for most people, if you put in a url, it will be clickable in email.
06/23/2006 02:24:26 PM · #14
Ok, but I also want a random generic comment generator button on the site then.

It would generate such classics as:
Great photo but you are awful and should be banned from the site.
Do you know the face of god? 1
I don't understand what this is, is it a picture?
This photo would does not meet OSHA safety regulations.
I think the human body is disgusting. You disgust me, Nice butt though.

Alternatively there could be a button to prefill all comment boxes with:
"Troll comment. Nothing to see here, move along."

No, but I put the whole URL -- they can then copy/paste.

However, depending on their email client, it may work if you include the HTML code for the link, approximately like this:

Link to my Red Spiral photo

In fact, I'll send you the above right now as a test!

You'd have to quote your href but it still doesn't work.

There is an easy solution to this problem that works now without modification to the site or voting habits.

Accept your score for what it is. Then after voting is complete ask for critiques in the forums. Don't argue with those that critique and thank them for thier honest opinion.

Works well, works now, doesn't require change ...

Edit to add: It does require change, but only at the individual photog level.

yeah, but sometimes even a "blah" comment is more helpful than no comments. Although, I guess no comments tends to say "this was so boring that nobody could think of anything to say about it"?

When people were doing the 'madatory' commenting to get into the challenge where you had to have more given than received, people were giving decent comments.

Because we threatened them if they didn't -- and with the limited time frame, we were able to watch for problems. But overall, we don't want to have to institute a rating system for comments, which is where this would eventually lead.

I had a long reply, but decided it was better posted in the Rant section.... so it will be there shortly, when I finish getting it off my chest :)

If they are not commenting now, and based on some of the comments vs score on my image, i think it'd be better if they perhaps they didn't vote...

I know this falls into the 'you can't legislate morality' category, but as i stated, what is the mission statement here?
