I have a 350D and the standard kit lens and would like a telephoto lens. I do not have lots of $$$ to throw around and the local camera shop has 4 options I'd like you opinions on (I've converted prices into approx USD)...

1. used Sigma 70-300 f4/5.6 DL, $108
2. used Sigma 70-300 f4/5.6 APO DG MACRO, $173
3. new Canon 90-300, $210
4. new Canon 90-300 USM, $238

I'm thinking it's between the Sigma APO and the Canon USM but I'd like some advice please.

the APO version of the lens (as opposed to #1) is a very good lens for the money. You gotta spend $600+ to get better (canon 70-200 f4)

I'm not familiar with a canon 90-300. 70-300 sure, they have several versions of it, new ones old ones, IS ones USM ones, etc. Pretty much across the board all of them are soft from 200-300mm, excpet maybe the new IS verison, which sometimes won't work in portrait mode (the IS goes nuts or something).

I had (and many many people here too) the Sigma 70-300. Great lens. Very sharp. Most of my Wild Birds i my portfolio are taken with it. Once i got my tamron 70-210 2.8 i didn't use it anymore so i sold it.

Just bought the Sigma 70-300mm APO DG Macro lens, so far it seems very good, very sharp.
Can't wait to get out for some proper wildlife + candid shots with it.
