I owned a Nikon Point & shoot (Coolpix 995, still have it and still use it at work) and had lots of experince with Nikon microscopes (love 'em!). I was predisposed to Nikon, but did my research and decided the 10D was my best bet at the time. I also regarded that purchase as a stepping stone to full frame, and Canon was clearly headed that direction, while Nikon was not (and is still officially not). This weighed secondarily but heavily in the decision.
Still another thing that weighed in favor of Canon was the flexibility of the EOS mount to take a wide variety of non-Canon lenses, including most Nikon, many M42 (aka Pentax screw mount), some Leica, and even old Exakta-mount lenses.
Fast forward from 2003 to September 2005 and the release of the Canon 5D. This was the camera I'd been hoping for since I first went DSLR, and I broke my own rules and became an "unofficial Canon beta tester" by taking delivery of one of the first 5Ds shipped to retail outlets in the US (a bit after EU). I haven't looked back. |

...because the 300D kit was by far the cheapest way into DSLR territory. I bought mine a little while after it came out. In the UK, the Sigma SD9 had broken the £ 1,000 barrier, but without lens. The 300D kit, when I bought it on holiday was 'only' £ 850. Bargain!!

I bought into the Canon system for several reasons.
1. I talked a lot to my dad about it around that time, and he told me how the EF mount was newer and more future proof.
2. Canon had just released the perfect camera for me, the 10D. :)
3. Canon had what seamed to be a better lens lineup.
4. I was able to borrow lenses from and lend out to my dad. |

"Why did you choose Canon?"
Canon has the best current sensor. However, abandonment of the FD lens mount remains unforgivable - Not that it was such a great mount to begin with, but it proves the company can tend to be opportunistic in a negative way, and uncaring when it comes to customer support. I always thought that everyone should use Lieca mounts - it would make lens buying much simpler. Olympus/Panasonic/Leica/4/3rds currently has the right idea. I have bought and used a few Canon 35mm & digital cameras & equipment - currently the Rebel - they are a dust magnet, but work good. But also Nikon, Leica, Olympus & Pentax - They all are good. Although I am basically a sucker for trying various kinds of equipment - in terms of longevity, my Nikon stuff as old as 30 years remains intact, functional, compatible with either digital or film and require no upgrade or adaptor. |

I had used a Rebel at college for a year before buying mine - I was familier with it and liked the "feel". Canon has a good rep, IMO, a somewhat more positive rating than I hear for Nikon.
And my Nikon P&S, which I owned prior to the Rebel, crapped out slowly and never really impressed me with it's abilities. So when the time to upgrade came, it wasn't a debate.

When I was thinking of upgrading from my Minolta DiMage 7i, I went to our base store (in Naples, Italy) just to check out what they had. They had the Digital Rebel (300D) and I bought it just to see if I liked it and I was intending on returning it within the 45 day cash back period then getting one online for much less. The 45 days came around and I just couldn't bring myself to parting ways with it so I kept it. I ended up getting ripped off because I paid over $200 more than I would have paid online. Never looked back.
