SO I always see people posting their beautiful butterfly shots and I always wish I could capture something like that. Well no monarchs or black swallowtails for me- or whatever they are, but I found this lil guy today and thought it was kind of pretty.

He's very pretty. I can never seem to get close enough before they fly away. |

Find a field you can get to that is just kind of wild or a park where you can go early in the morning when there is still lots of dew but the sun is out, butterflies tend to be less skittish when they have just come out bc they are more interested in breakfast than they are in you. Be prepared to get wet but just sit for a bit and let them get used to you then get as close as you can. JMTC |

for those in the Tulsa OK area there is a butterfly exhibit there, it is an extra dollar to get in but is well worth it. Going to daa a few shots I took there to my profile. I will also be shooting the butterfly pavillion in Denver CO the first week of July. I know other area zoos and cities have exhibits like these that are great :)
edit to add thumbs

You have the right time, but the wrong reason. It's colder in the morning and butterflies are definitely more active the warmer it gets.

I think that may be the same Painted Lady butterfly I have here ... I seem to remember reading that their range includes the entire US.

the pic in my profile was shot with my p&s and the frog was in a jar lol. Yes I let him go when I was done taking pictures.
Dr Achoo, it's warm here all together now. It's been pushing 80 by 7am so I think doing as suggested would work just fine here. Would love to find a butterfly exhibit. Went to one at the Portland Zoo many years ago and it was amazing. I think there was one at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle as well that we went to about 6 years ago when we were still in Seattle.
They're so beautiful. Have seen them out early this year but they're always fluttering about. |

So, by your name...are you Miss IN Seattle? or are you Missin' Seattle? because there is no way in hell it's 80 degrees at 7AM out here. ;)
I'll have to check out the Portland Zoo....;)

Here's an interesting butterfly read I recently came upon...
What do butterflies do when it rains? |

it's Missin' Seattle yes lol. Started out as Miss in Seattle though. Then met hubby and thanks to him we left Seattle so it became "missin".
We're in VA now. Been here for 2 years and spent 3 years in NJ before this. Right now it's 96 out and the heat index is at 105.
Still "missin" Seattle. 2 more years and we'll give transferring back there another try. |

thanks for that link. My daughter would LOVE to do something like that. We have a small flower bed in the front that gets a lot of afternoon sun and my husband just pulled out all the stumps and roots that were in there. I wonder if it's still early enough in the season to plant a garden like that? |

Just out of interest, can anyone recommend a good book on Entomology, just to help identify stuff? |

I don't know of any offhand, but I know the audobon society has some excellent small books out that you can carry with you. We have one for plants and trees. |
