Does anyone have any advice for my problem?
I have been playing with portraits lately (PS CS2) - am happy with some results (skin, eyes etc). What I am trying to do now is to change the background. The problem being shadow and fine hair.
I have tried following Scott Kelby's method using the extraction filter. He suggests using a very large brush for less defined areas such as flyaway hair. This doesn't appear to do anything different than a thin brush! To my eyes the selection still looks fairly rough. He then suggests cleaning up with the history brush without explaining the details. I don't know whether he means to zoom in at a huge magnification and do each hair strand by strand.
The other method I have tried is with the Magic Wand. Although quicker this still leaves a fairly rough selection.
The problem area I am dealing with is shadow (that I dont want) that is close to the face (appearing on the background wall) and flyaway hair - which I want to retain, but is difficult because of some of the background showing through.
Is there an easier method of changing the background and retaining the finer edge detail without it looking like a kids paper cut. Or am I doomed to zoom in at a thousand percent and do every hair strand by strand?
Any advice from the Photoshop gurus would be appreciated.

Well, beyond what you've already tried... not really. This is the very reason they created chroma-key backdrops. Nothin says magic wand like day-glo green.
