Sometimes the wow or shock factor can make a photo overcome its shortcomings in a contest where you have non experts voting. This is an example of that.
If I were judgeing this I would first give you a 1 for calling someone out in the forum for a comment made on a photo. Then I would get down to the photo. The hambuger- the cheese isn't the same on all the patties, the lettuce is piled up at the front on a finger and on the side of one patty, mustard is the same way. Something is hanging off the meat next to his mouth. The tomato is uneven and has seeds hanging out. It isn't tack sharp on the nose or the lower right. The lower bun doesn't look very good. The background isnt terible but maybe a backyard feel would be better than a driveway feel. Dude needs a shave. Otherwise this is a great shot.

But this is all very realistic. Have you ever had a burger from a fast food place? I've never had one that looked all pretty and perfect like the pictures on the menus :-) Not even close! |

The picture would be improved if the burger was "all pretty and perfect like the pictures on the menus". |

First off he said he was open for discussion...and I really didn't want an open conversation on my photo...so the forums, I thought, was the perfect place...and if you go back I left a disclaimer for this thread stating I didn't start it to piss yann off...he asked for a discussion and I'm trying to allow that to happen. 2nd I thought the sloppiness of the burger helped this shot just look that more indulgent...the thing is so big things are falling off it...but that's my opinion on how I shot it.

It's funny. I think the lighting on this shot is exceptionally good. I can't see the shot getting anything but worse if the face were less in shadow. If I had any complaint at all, it would be the hyper-blue sky, but even that seems to fit in with the cartoon coloring of the burger. And the sloppiness of the burger? Essential to the shot IMO. If it were neat and tidy, it would not be as "excessive" and the shot wouldn't work as well.
I think, for this challenge, it's an excellent shot and well deserves the ribbon.
R.

Don't pout like that. I can give you some attention too!
Since this is still the burger shot discussion, I'm going to compare your shot with the burger shot.
I think the lighting is much better overall in the cone shot BUT, there is a big flaw on a tooth :(
I think the main reason the cone didn't end up above the burger is because the burger represents indulgence better in the way that it's freaking huge. If your cone had like 4 or 5 balls it would have been voted higher for sure. |

LOL Thanks for the critique, yann! I do appreciate your viewpoint.
Now about the balls and bokeh tooth, not sure my therapist will understand all of this! :D |

The point is to make us better photographers WITHIN TOPIC CONSTRAINTS - it just makes it a bit more difficult than simply taking a good photo - hence the "challenge".
Personally, I have a bigger problem with ribbons when the photo is good, but has nothing (or only remotely so) to do with the topic. |

The shot deserves a yellow becase it had the votes for a yellow. Simple as that. This is all very subjective and voters can vote anyway they like for any reason what so ever.
I gave it a 6. I thought the field in gerneral was pretty weak with a few notable exceptions.
Congrats on your yellow. As long as you followed the rules you don't owe anyone an explination. |
