Do you think you could go a week with the scores turned off on a picture you think has a real chance at being close to the top?
Whew, I break into a cold sweat thinking about it. But it did cross my mind to try. The result of seeing your shot on the front page would certainly be a pleasant surprise... |

You really do need to seek help for these thoughts of selfinflicted torture you are having :-)

I have done it. Not by choice...but when I was away with work for a week at a time. Hated it and ended up having someone SMS the scores to me...now how sad is that?

No way. Not that I'm expecting any pleasant surprises of finding my shot has ribboned...
I've been trying for days to limit myself to just checking the scores at night. So far I've managed to cut my habit down to about 27 updates a day... |

My problem is that I have a computer in the office, which is right next to the laundry room, so every time I go in to fold a load, start the next, I check my scores, and I have a computer in the kitchen, where I spend a LOT of time, so it's tempting to walk over and click the update button, and there are two computers up in the kids' study area, so if I walk through there, it's easy to just quickly check my score...
I do ok on the days when I'm not home much...

Not sure if I could go a week but I have been able to limit myself to just the regular hourly updates the site does automatically. I wouldn't mind if we gave it a trial run for a while, no scores during the voting period, just to see what would happen. Of course it would need more than just one week to get true feedback because the first week would be dominated by people complaining, joking, etc. Might be good for people to find other outlets that were more beneficial to their photography than score scrutinizing.

Updaters Anonymous - a 12 step program sounds like an idea.
I guess my only method of staying away from that button is not to submit, so that is what I am doing till WPL2 starts ... I think :)

The above makes an interesting presumption that had not occurred to me, namely that there are significant numbers of DPCers who log in specifically to check their scores. I'm proud to say my addiction is under sufficient control that I don't do that. If I happen to be IN DPC for reading posts, making comments, voting, whatever, why then I check my score. Frequently. But I never feel an urge to get up from my reading chair and wander into the studio/gallery to check my score.
Alright, I lied. I feel the urge, but I resist it. Aren't y'all proud of me?
And let's hear NO comments along the lines of "Yeah, Bear, but you LIVE on DPC so there can't be many times when you'd have to make a special trip to update."
I yam what I yam.

Those things you do -"reading posts, making comments, voting, whatever," are what I mean by "outlets that were more beneficial to their photography than score scrutinizing"; and you left out your main activity here - helping less experienced photographers to learn.
