I got a look at my incisions from my compartment syndrome surgery. They used sutures on the inside of my calf and staples on the outside.

Any clue why?

Thanks :)

I can't think off the top of my head why you would do both in a repair. Staples are faster than sutures and tend to be used in places where scars aren't as important.

It could have been something as silly or easy as the stapler broke or someone wanted to practice sutures...

The dr knew I was really nervous about the scars and promised to do a good job closing. (they are 5-8" scars) It is a teaching hospital, as Naval Hospitals are, so maybe you are right about someone practicing. I just thought it was odd to have 2 different types of closure. I am curious how many staples are in there. There are A LOT and they are really close together.

Thanks for your reply :)

They ran out of staples, and Office Depot was closed?
I really have no idea!

LOL! There is no Office Depot in Guam. Maybe that explains it ;o)

Don't sutures dissolve, and then you go in to have the staples removed?

Just guessing but staples on the inside would be hard to get out.

Just guessing...I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV...but I have had a lot of stitches...

LOL!!! Your response made me laugh because you missunderstood me. I have 2 incisions on each leg. One on the inside of my calf and one on the outside. They used stitches to sew up the inside incision and staples to close the outside incision :)

off topic, speaking of guam and the military... got a bud (member of our local dSLR group) caught a really cool gig shooting the yearbook for a really big ship (you know the kind) that will be passing through your neck of the woods. His question is what is there to see and do there over a day or two? Any must shoot scenery?

K...but to the regularly scheduled topic.

Gotcha... in that case they were practicing... I did 15 in the Corps and it felt like every time that I went to the Navy Hospital (dental was the same) they were practicing.

My fav was those guys/gals that gave shots for the first time...a real treat that was... :)

Now don't that make you feel dandy...

If he enjoys hiking, Guam has tons of 'boonie stomps.' (hikes) Guam has several waterfalls and secluded beaches you can hike to. One waterfall hike is just 5 miles from my house and is a fairly easy hike. The coastline here is BEAUTIFUL. I have a few shots on my website if you want to look. They were all taken just by driving down the coastline and stopping on the side of the road. Diving and snorkeling is extremely popular here. I highly recommend he give snorkeling a try.
