No photos of it, but there is a pretty large fire in the Sedona area. I know a lot of people have been there or plan on going there some day. Let's hope they get it contained quickly so people can return to their homes and the area can be saved.
The area on fire now is south of Sedona. Luckily the winds are blowing south at the moment so the amazing areas like secret mountain wilderness and oak creek canyon are safe for now.

Here's hoping they can contain it quickly and the winds don't shift! |

Forest fires can be brutal. I just got back from Los Alamos, NM, where they had a fire 7 years ago. My parents home was right on the edge of the fire line, and several of their neighbors burned. The area is still suffering from the effects of the fire, and hiking there just isn't what it used to be.
I'll keep Sedona in my prayers. It's such a beautiful area. |

this is pretty sad that I'm getting my news from DPC but I'm glad you posted this & will be keeping an eye on the local news. I guess this is just the begining- let's hope it's a very mild fire season. |

The fire is south and east of Sedona in the Munds Mountain Wilderness. Sounds like it is close to Courthouse Rock where kibic and I took pictures. In this image Kirbic is looking right at Courthouse Rock:

The fire is somewhere close. This location is on the north end of "The Village of Oak Creek" where two house were burned.

Fire is contained, Sedona is safe and people are back in there homes.

Luckily, this area is not the sonoran desert or pinion pine like most of what covers AZ (which take a really long time to recover), so it should recover fairly quickly.

Here we go again.

3,000 acers already and today is going to be a bad day for fighting a fire. And this time it's in a really bad spot. Oak Creek Canyon has been evacuated and it's one of my favorite places in Arizona. The Secret mountain wilderness with amazing areas like devils bridge and vultee arch are also in danger. Check the photos submited by readers on the link.
This is really bad.

Wow, until the Monsoons start, every lightning strike or careless camper can be deadly. Lets just hope it doesn't burn so hot, it sterilizes the ground. Thats what happened on parts of Mt Lemmon here in Tucson a few years back. |

Wow, that must be quite a sight from the airport overlook. That's so sad. I was just there in April and was wondering about wildfires there. So is that the area adjacent to "Coffee Pot" rock? |

How sad. It is such a beautiful area - I love it there. Hopefully, the fire can be contained soon. |

There has been some conflicting reports from KPHO news. Yesterday they said the fire was 3,000 acres then this morning said 1,000 acres. But this report in the Republic sounds very ominous.
Louddog and I hiked in Oak Creek Canyon two Saturday's ago and it is pretty dry up there. (Nearly as dry as the voting on my "shadows" entry taken there)
It would be a disaster for one of Arizona's more scenic wilderness areas should the fire get established in Oak Creek Canyon. Today's afternoon weather could be the determining factor. :(

as of an hour ago the fire was on the rim of Oak Creek Canyon. If they can't stop it this will be really bad. Oak Creek Canyon is a narrow canyon that tunnels the wind and heads up hill from where the fire is now. With winds, and traveling up hill the fire will be pretty unstopable the entire length of the canyon (about 28 miles). Not only is this a beautiful place but there are about 500 homes and several businesses in this canyon.

Not looking good...
According to the article there is zero containment, winds have picked up to 20 mpg and temperature increased to 97 degrees. They say the fire has jumped into the canyon near Slide Rock. They hope to prevent it from moving deeper in.

Steve,
Was your "shadows" entry from the West Fork trail in Oak Creek Canyon?
Sedona seems to have some kind of hold on me - I sure feel attached to the place. I don't even want to think about Oak Creek Canyon burning! Is the fire in the Soldiers Pass area? I keep checking the news to see what is happening. |

Yup, it was. Mine was taken in the chicken coup at the old abandoned resort there. It was Daryl's(Louddog's) idea to go there to hike and take a shot in the coup for the frame challenge. We both took the frame picture but neither submitted it. It was a nice hike.
Sad to think it is threatened by wildfire. Soldier's Pass is near where the fire originated yesterday. It has been moving northeast from there ever since. According to the latest report Daryl referenced the fire has made it into the canyon near Slide Rock. :(

Yes... looking grim... fire creeping to canyon floor and sirens set off to warn remaining residents to flee... Fire now is within 1/2 mile of highway 89a where firefighters will make their stand to try and stop it. If it gets past them it will be difficult to stop because of rugged wilderness terrain and a natural wind funnel that will push the flames.

Different fire. That one is North of the Grand Canyon. Arizona has 6 or so wildfires in progress right now. The Sedona "Brin's" fire is currently designated the #1 wildfire in the US to battle by the forest service.

This is it... It is not looking very good for Oak Creek...
I saw video this morning from the Brin's fire and it has reached highway 89 just across the road and about 50 yards from a housing development called Manzanita, I believe. This is where firefighters have vowed to make a stand to prevent it from leaping the highway to the east side. They say if it gets to the east side it may be unstoppable and march right on up the narrow canyon.
The good news it is the fire is not being driven much by wind.
The bad news is it is at one of the places where the canopy of trees arches out over the highway on both sides and the highway is not very wide to begin with. Air tankers cannot drop retardant there because the canyon is too narrow.
I attempted to put add a shared marker on Google Earth to show everyone where the fire has reached the highway, but unsure it is actually visible. I never tried that before. If you have Google Earth and want to see a satellite image of the area where the fight to save the canyon is going on right now then start by entering "Sedona,AZ" in the location. Be sure you have the "roads" and "Google Earth Community" displays checked in "layers" and you will see highway 89 labeled. Just follow along the road a ways North out of Sedona until you come to a blue "i" titled "Manzanita Campground". The last small set of buildings on the east side of the canyon just BEFORE you get there is where the fire has reached the road. If visible my marker would be a blue "i" labeled "Sedona 'Brins's' fire".

Too depressing to read the news as there is not much to be optimistic about. This is one of my favorite areas and it does not look good. If lines don't hold today there is not much that can stop the fire, which will be going up hill, in a heavily wooded canyon, with the wind at it's back tomorrow. Lets hope the people working hard to stop this have a good day.

Indeed, it is grim. It will be a very sad day if they cannot stop it at the highway. Sounds like it's going to take a superhuman effort to do so :-( |

Bad news/Good news/Bad news...
Bad News: the fire made it to they hwy and they had to back burn a lot of area to make a strong line.
Good News: it looks like that worked and they may have stopped the fire from moving East. This could save Oak Creek Canyon and all the houses and businesses.
Bad News: winds are blowing north today and that is where the fire is moving. The fire over took Sterling Canyon. Their first attempt at a line looks like it will not hold as embers are flying over the line and starting spot fires on the other side. If it doesn't hold, the next availabe place for a line is 2 miles north.
A lot of beautiful land is getting charred. They are saying they can't put this out. They can only hope to contain it and hope the monsoon rains come soon.
