My entry will be a portrait...i have a HS senior to shoot tomorrow. No clue what she looks like...

I doubt i'l have the circular points of light type bokeh. Sorry.
OI have one image that has it - and no others. I think that was a canon 50 1.8...my only other lens was a tamron 28-80 3.5-5.6(a $50 lens) My good lenses make cremy BGs...

shots like this - //cpphoto.home.comcast.net/maria/img_1178.htm
exif data is posted there.
//cpphoto.home.comcast.net/maria/img_1186.htm - a bit short on fill flash though.

those were with a 70-200 2.8. this one was with a 24-135 3.5-5.6, but it focuses closer
//www.pbase.com/cpphotography/image/53920192

My first bokeh entry i like, but the voters found better.

Funny how people always seem to want to interpret the challenge definition so literally except when it tells them to be broad-minded ...

not trying to be closed minded or anything, but the challenge description also says...

"take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background."

This is going to be an ''verrry interesting'' challenge....

Yeah, as was pointed out earlier, that's a sloppy bit of writing.

Good luck with you guys in this challenge. I just couldn't get comfy with the challenge description... so my shutter stayed on for 30 seconds...

Only if it's at odds with the intent of the challenge organisers. I'm very happy to view all kinds of bokeh - circles of light or delicious blurs, background or foreground - I know that eiher way, I'm going to delight in all that eye candy. I'm very happy to have been educated on bokeh, something I had never heard of before this challenge.

But I've also noted that DNMC gets thrown around a bit, and that there are some voters who stick to strict interpreation of the 'letter' of the challenge, rather than focussing on the intent of the photographer under a slightly looser interpretation of the intent of the challenge organisers.

That is why I was seeking some clarity of this particular challenge's intent. Sorry if I came across as overly pedantic or anything.

has anyone mentioned yet that the previous winners do not seem to exibit obvious 'circles of light'.

Looks more like an out of focus background to me. One thing i notice however, they seem to have clean lines where the bokeh ends, and the in focus subject begins

I do think you have hit something. A shot which totally separates the subject from the background with fullout OOF background and fully in focus subject will likely do well. That isn't to say that it HAS to be this way, but I bet you'll see more Top 10 shots which follow this pattern than don't.

As someone who appears to be "heavy" on the definition of bokeh I will predict that my shot - which does encompass all of the things I have spoken about - will bomb.

Why?

Because I am too literal in my interpretation of a challenge and end up taking shots which conform rather than shots that appeal.

Now there is an interesting life lesson! Time to shoot more and talk less, methinks :-)

I entered a photo and it's only my second challenge....EVER! I interpreted the challenge literally since it was kind of difficult to understand. I had GREAT photos where the foreground was blurry and the background was crisp and clean but once I re-read the challenge, I had to switch to a less desirable photo (in my opinion).

Dang, another challenge with a ton of entries. I was hoping that all the debate about little white circles would send some of the people over to the 30 second challenge. It's hard to vote these really big challenges, because after awhile all the entries start to look the same. It is nice to see so many people getting into photography, though, and I'm sure there will be some really inspiring shots in the bunch.

Give it an xray at work, just to make sure. Or maybe a cat scan.

I'm off until Thursday - nothing will get me to go in....besides it worked fine for my Bokeh entry. I fully expect a nice high 5 as usual. :|
