So I have a Lowepro backpack but it is not very comfortable. I need one that IS comfortable and I can use hiking for long periods, will be waterproof, and will have a "slot" to carry my tripod. Any suggestions my faithful answerers? Thanks.

Tamrac Adventure 75. holds ALL my kit, comfortable for a day out shooting and with all the Tamrac add-ons, you'll never need another bag.

VERY comfortable, lots of room, tripod pouch, etc...
Tamrac Expedition 7
Edit: These work really nicely on the side of the bag too. A lot bigger and nicer than they look in the photo.

I have the Tamrac Expedition 5 and it is, hands down, the most comfortable backpack I have ever owned. It rides great, has several around-the-front straps to help distribute the load however you like it, and the back padding is superior.
I imagine that any of the Expedition series would be as nice - they just vary in size.
Definetly go down to the camera shop and try one on, if you can!

I have the LowePro Rover AW it holds my camera + 4 lenses and extras, and my 12" powerbook, and extra pair of clothes, some light snack, tripod, GPS and other small stuff needed on my mountainhikes.
it's very comfortable, I carried it for 5 days walking around Rome and London in very hot weather and I really liked it, I didn't get tired even though I walked about 30 miles every day.

| Just curious, what exactly is uncomfortable about your current backpack? Perhaps it just isn't adjusted properly. Makes a world of difference when they're set just right. |

Yes, make sure it is the right size for you and it is adjusted properly. And if it does not have a good waist strap with hip pads it's crap as that is probably the most comfort enhancing feature of a backpack today.
edit to add a good tutorial

I'd put that at the very end of the list.....worry about comfort, size etc first.
It is so easy to rig something up for attaching a tripod, it would be a shame if you decided against a bag you really like just because it doesn't have that. |

I have tried it and have been thinking of getting one. I think it's very well designed.

I have it and I love it. Like idnic said, with the available add-ons, it is perfect for an all-day outing. Wouldn't go with anything else. |

if the backpack is ment for hiking I think it should hold more than just cameragear, on hikes you need extra chlothes, rainjacket, GPS, something to eat, water and more, and it should all fit in one backpack.
the Rover from LowePro has a compartement for cameragear at the bottom, and at the top is a big compartement that can hold everything else needed on a hike, and it has a tripod pouch on the outside, it has harness with a waist strap and chest strap, it can be adjusted for all bodysizes and is a great travelbag, the only one I take on my trips to other countries.

You might also consider the Adventure 7 or the Adventure 9, both from Tamrac, if you need less camera gear, but more stuff space.
If you're hiking medium to long distances in rough terrain, you might think of one of these, I'm thinking 5 to 15 miles in back-country for a day. The extra stuff space at the top could be more inviting for this type of need.
I have yet to see a true Backpackers camera gear setup, and I'm really suprised by that (though, I haven't in truth looke too hard). I'm talking a pack that could organize a reasonable set of photo gear and still load another 30lbs of provisions.

I like my Lowepro Mini-treker AW. Comforatable, not huge but big enough for my 20D with Canon 70-200 f/4L attached with hood attached also, Sigma 24-70EX DG with hood attached, Canon 50mm lens, 3 tube set, 2x extender, Canon 580 flash with bounce hood attached, and misc pockets for everything else. Heck leave a lens home and then there's room for a sandwich ;)

I believe have the Lowepro Mini-Trekker Classic. It is fine, but the straps are a pain on the shoulder when walking around. Not nearly as familiar feeling and comfortable as backpacks I own for traditional hiking. Make sense? THanks for the words...Anymore?

Another vote for the Tamrac. I have the Expedition 8. It is super padded and comfy and even has lumbar support. However, it is really big!!!!

Hmm, that's the same model number and everything, but mine looks like this:
They need to update their site or something. |
