I recently got my hoya r72 filter. Yesterday, though I took some pictures and there was a circle in the middle of all of my photos where it seemed a little blown out and blurry. Any idea of what this is or how to fix it? EDIT: There is no circle without the filter on it.

many lenses aren't suitable for IR because their coatings cause internal reflections. The quality of the lens is usually not a factor ( the great Nikon 12-24 DX is one such lens), but just the coatings.

I've heard a lens hood can help minimize that effect.

Use it on your 50m f1.8 and not your kit lens and you will be fine.

Does anyone have examples of this filter used on a 50mm 1.8 with the 300D? Or is it just not worth it to get that filter for this camera?

Can't help with examples, but it's not the camera, it's the lens that makes the difference. IR is different than visible light, and the optical design of some lenses just doesn't do well with IR. I'm not experinced enough to know which lenses are good vs. bad.

Of course i do :)

Infrared can be done with the 300d but expect very long shutter speeds.
I got fed up with this and got a olympus c2020 and now a nikon d50.

One last question (sorry for hijacking this thread) - is there a difference between the hoya IR filter and the Promaster IR filter other than price? (thanks for posting the pic Marbo)

Yea, I learned very quickly about the long shutter speeds. It is quite a hassel but I don't mind too much.
