I'm new at this and i guess the 1/2.5 has better light capturing ability. But what i cant understand is why panasonic would go 1/1.8 on the dmc-fz30k. A move from the dmc-fz20k 1/2.5
So which is better? |

Physically, a 1/1.8" sensor is larger than 1/2.5" sensor.
So, if you have a 1/1.8 5MP sensor, and a 1/2.5" 5MP sensor, most likely, then 1/1.8" sensor will yield better results in terms of digital noise.
BUT, if you have a 10MP 1/1.8" sensor and a 3MP 1/2.5" sensor, this time round, the 3MP 1/2.5" sensor would, likely, yield better results in terms of digital noise.

I just edited my post to include extra information. Hope that helps.
Basically, the bigger the photosites and spacing on the sensor, the better. |

well, 1/1.8 is actually a larger number, it's a fraction :-) But, yes the larger a sensor, the larger the photo buckets can be. A larger size is a good indicator that it is a better performing sensor.

Fotomann is right - it's a fraction :)
also, this link has an explanation on digital sensor sizes. It's a good read to understand the various sensor sizes available today, and how they can contribute to the image quality. Back in the film days, the camera body, lens and sensor(film) are 3 separate entity. Now in digital days, the sensor(film) is not changeable - they are forcing us to upgrade whenever there is a new film, er... I mean sensor available ;)
