I read some of the articles about capturing fireworks in the Tips & Tricks section, and would like to try getting some shots of the fireworks over Grant Park.

Anyone else interested in making this a group outing?

Would you care to link to the thread(s) you read? (sorry, don't have time to search now, but would like to see it tomorrow).

When?

meyers - do you mean for the 4th of July weekend? Send more info when you get a chance. I don't know what date they are this year. If I figure it out, I will pass it along.

Fireworks Revisited

I think there are fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday, so how about July 1st?

Chicago has a great fireworks show every Wednesday and Saturday at Navy Pier.

Since my parents are in town the beginning of July I won't be going to KY and might be able to get in on this. I love shooting fireworks and since I just got my e500 I'm very eager to do this.

I'll check back to see if we get an actual date planned.

Ok - are we talking the weekly Navy Pier sponsored fireworks display, this is every sat and wed for about 20min or so and the one on the 1st starts at 10:15pm, I can try to scout it out this week and see how long it is and were the views are best.

Or are we talking the HUGE city planned one for the July 4th weekend? It will actually be on the 3rd at 9:30pm this year this will last much longer and be pretty extravagent

I was thinking the twice-weekly show, which could serve as practice for those of us less skilled (looking in the mirror here), so we might take better pictures at the bigger show in July 3rd.

Good - I was hoping you would say the twice weekly Navy Pier one. The crowd on the 3rd for the city fireworks would be overwhelming.

I would be up for meeting on the 1st, I will be in that area anyway that night.

As I said earlier, I will also scout the show out this week and see where the good vantage points are. I am thinking by the planetarium...

I was going to take a look around there on Wednesday; I'll post what I thought of my vantage points. Maybe I'll get a decent "motion blur" picture out of it..

Good links; I will study the nyip site more when I get home.
Here in Japan there are fireworks all through summer - it's just getting to them that's the problem. There's a different technique I read about last year which I haven't had the chance to try out yet.
One from last year:

Of course, I'm nowhere near Chicago, but I'll link my smugmug fireworks from last year. (The only fireworks display I was able to get to see last summer lasted about ten minutes...)

Doh, a stomach virus kept me home on Wednesday, and Comcast decided I didn't need my internet access either.

Maya, would you be willing to help get this GTG organized? I'm not sure which location would be best for a small group to meet.

I went last night to see the Navy Pier fireworks, the thing is that they only last for 10min on the dot. Started at 9:30 and were over at 9:40. So not sure if that is worth a full blown gtg. I got good views from south of the pier i.e. museum campus.

I know there is talk of a gtg in early August (12th), how about we try to tie it all in together? Soon as I get some input from both threads on the idea of a half day, south of the chicago river gtg, ending the night at the museum campus to see the navy pier fireworks, I will start the official aug 12 gtg thread.

What do you think?

It always seemed like the fireworks lasted longer; I guess when I'm just watching them time seems to slow down.

Anyway, the August 12th GTG sounds good, and I'd like to be in on that. I'll be out there on July 1st, practicing for the bigger show on the 3rd.

Maybe they last a bit longer for the weekend shows.

I will put you down for the 12th when I start the new thread.
