I thought the autofocus was actually in the lens on Canon? My autofocus in any mode other than auto is messed up. :(

The AF motor is in the lens, but the AF sensor is in the body. If it works in any mode, however, then a mechanical failure is *nearly* ruled out. Whatare the symptoms? Describe as precisely as you can what does or does not happen.

how canon AF works
a common focus error
?? YOu got a switch on the lens - AF/MF - auto or manual.
On the body you got One Shot, AI servo and Servo (brain failing...). anyway, in one shot you focus, hold the shutter 1/2 way and focus holds there.
in the middlemode the same applies, BUT if the camera senses subject movemnt it goes into full servo - which is the last mode, for sports. the camera needs a moment to figure out the subject and then focuses continously to keep it in focus as it moves about.
also, CFn 4 allows you to change the AF from the shutter button to the * button - no AF until you press the * button. 1D folks love this one, and if you have all USM lenses this is probably a good thing, but not so handy with non-usm lenses.

It just won't focus, and hence won't shoot.

This happened alot with the 20D. end it back, they have a fix but don't acknowledge there is a problem. Also send your main Canon lens. They should adjust and calibrate it to the body also. If you haven't already tried, set the focus point to a single point. If that doesn't work select a different point and see if it helps. Also put it into single versus the mode that allows moving average focus. Best of luck

Okay, can you help out with more specifics?
Auto focus in Auto mode works. In Apature priority, what happens? Is the motor seeking at all, or is it just dead? |

They guy at Glenn's fixed it. He said it was just something in the settings that was screwed up. But, in every setting but auto, it would act like it wanted to focus, but couldn't quite get there and wouldn't shoot.

any clue waht was screwed up in 'the settings' that would cause it to not focus?
My 30D did a backfocus thing at my last wedding...not sure what started it or even what fixed it - turn off and on, lens off and one and it worked ok. my flash and it acted up later in the day at the reception...nothing repeatable though, so nothing to fix.
