Well this past wednesday I got a chance to go to the track I shoot at and cover a special show. With two Nascar stars. Kenny Schrader who is part owner of the local track and Kenny Wallace. I got to spend a few minutes in between racing covering Wallace. And I learned a couple of things, first he really is a jokester. He was having so much fun it was unreal. A real down to earth guy who will even ham it up for a photographer when asked too. His Nephew Steven Wallace was also there. Here are a few photos from the night. Any criticizm would be nice. We have a Nascar night of stars coming up August 2nd and I'd like to do a little better then. Are there any of these you could see being used in the local paper? Thanks Kenny Wallace is in the 21W car, and Kenny Schrader is in the 99 Car. The driver Wallace is joking around with is UMP late model star Billy Moyer, the other person is a fan/friend of Kenny Wallace.

Great photos Matt. He really is a jokester. My husband and I have met him a couple times. I find it really funny that he has "The Hermanator" on that helmet. I thought he hated that name! I have a couple of him in my portfolio too.

have fun in august! that should be a blast!!

left you comments. other than the flash, the only other suggestion i'd make is to try shooting from a lot of different perspectives. don't shoot everything from eye-level.

Thanks Skiprow, I'll certainly use your suggestions when the whole group comes back in August. I will put alot of time in the viewfinder of the New 30D before then. I took several shots using the flash(only the second night out with the new one) and I thought I had it dialed in, but I can tell I didnt. Thanks again for the suggestions. Hopefully I will get things dialed in for the next time they are in town. Steven was hard to shoot. Not sure if he has ticks or what it is, but he has some facial expressions that make it tough to get good shots of him.

what flash are you using? that can make a HUGE difference in your shots. depending on the situation, you'll either be bumping it up or pushing it down--only the histogram will tell the truth.

as for steven, he has tourette's syndrome. even though it's public knowledge, i don't care to document it--and that's a challenge ;-)

one thing that will make a big difference with the 30d is to use the custom function to switch your pre-focus from being a half-shutter push to being one of the buttons on the back. that way you can get a focus lock without having the focus reset while shooting. it takes time/practice to get used to, but will have a significant impact on your ability to compose strong, tight shots.
