I have found many shots, some even great pictures, that does not fulfill the challenge - but I am fairly new here. Tell me if I am being too harsh, please.

When in doubt, look for a completed challenge of the same name. (Under
Challenge History) There's usually always a discussion thread about the current challenge that will have a few examples.

Hope that helps :)

There's a great frames picture from Reuters that was in the paper today from the World Cup. It's on the Reuters website - I'm not registered with them, so can only point you to their thumbnail page. Rditor's Choice for June 15.
It's the one through the net when the goal was scored.

So I guess everyone's scores are just...meh...? Nobody seems too excited and eager to share. I know I'm not!

Scores slowly going down over the last few days. I'll be lucky if the score stays high enough to bump something from my profile page.

Mine won't unless it goes up a couple 10's..... cuz it's a "nice" picture.

So it flew then?

And still one commentor who understood.

Hey Daniel, just peeked in your port and you got some really good stuff in there. The scores on your challenge entries are whack...sometimes I wonder what the voters are looking at (or through). Great stuff.

my score has dropped to a 4.8xxx with 4 comments. *LOL*

I really didn't expect my picture to do well to begin with.

I really don't know what the wish list is, being a newbie and all, but it sure sounds good. I am on to figure it out right now.
My highest score yet - thanks you guys :-)

This is my first challenge and I had no idea how compulsive I'd be about checking my score. I mean I'm hitting the site more frequently than a 14-year old checking their myspace.com friends list!

Yeah it's up...uuggh it's down. Can't wait until voting is over! But I guess I'm doing OK so far:

Welcome! :)

That's a great score. I reckon you get in the top 10 for sure for this challenge anyway.

To the whiners: lol.

To the winners: Great job. Alot of nice photos in this competition.

For those of you wondering about why your score is so low as the photo has no flaws and meets the requirements and so forth... keep in mind that alot of people give scores on a curve: Rating your pictures acording to the others in the competition. And as this competition is totally swarming with good photos, you might find yourself getting the short end of the stick.

(And if you think voting on a curve is silly, then keep in mind that if you give every photo in the competition the same score, you might as well not vote at all, as you will have no impact on the outcome of places for each photo. Voting on a curve says "this photo is the best and this one is the worst, these are in between, in this order. Reguardless of other competitions.")

I myself vote mainly on the technical aspects and challenge demands... with a hint of curve in the mix.

... foreground subject frames the rest of the image ...

So, the frame must be foreground, not background or anything else, right? A frame in itself, with nothing behind it is not in the foreground. A collection of frames on display, frames in the background, or where an object in the foreground is only one side out of four? (as a line of threes with a sun above it)

But what is a frame? Does it have to be square/rectangular, can it also be a circle, ellipse or other forms? Must it be unbroken? Mine is not rectangular, but it is an unbroken frame, clearly in the foreground of the main image, which is far away ...

I am happy enough about that until I see that 3/4 of the pics are above 6! Voting over in a few days, and this beats my Shadof Challenge entry by far (which was a quick improvised so-so).

But this is great fun - and for Bokeh I have a perfect idea - look forward to see how THAT will go ...

Based on this would be fair to say you believe that there are a few pictures submitted here that have very high technical quality but on the average the pictures submitted here are not that good technically?
06/18/2006 07:44:04 PM · #97
Not at all. It would be fair to say that I belive alot of people grade on a curve. If that is the case, then those people are not giving an comparing option between each competition. As the amount of points would be about the same for each competition.
If graded for technical quality and such then some competitions would score higher on average then others.

But seeing how there is no way of controling the way people vote (nor would that be a good idea in my opinion) we can't really say if the score of any given photo is low cause the other entries are so good, or because the photo is so bad ... can we now?

In my opinion Framed II has some really nice photos on average. One of the more lovely competitions I've seen.

How are the D50's doing? I went down a bit again but have been pretty close to where I am at now for about the last 50 votes.

I've just finished voting and I must say that there were some WOW photos to look at. On the other hand there were quite a bit where the foreground didn't frame the background and I'm not talking about the 'broken' frames, as to me they're frames as well. Instead of voting them low(er) I decided this time to vote them not at all, because I really have little time on hand to write comments right now, sorry.
