Howdy all! I am new to this site, (just stumbled across it two days ago and am terribly smitten) and the Bokeh challenge is the first I'm trying my hand at. I ran all around my little town trying to find my perfect bokeh shot and I must say, I feel out of my league here! But I did get two shots I think captured the look I was trying to achieve... let me know what you guys think! ^_^

OK, the other night I logged on to see who had placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd for unexpected find and I saw the bokeh challenge. Now, I have never in my life even heard the word bokeh. So I clicked on the challenge and read the challenge description.

"Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground or background elements of a photo. It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background."

Right away I started having ideas and getting ready to take the shots. Then I see this thread and now I'm not sure about this challenge. It would seem that alot of people have their own idea (maybe the more accurate one) of what bokeh means and will be looking for and voting according to their idea. I have seen this come up in a few of the challenges in my short time here. It would seem to me that either the challenge descriptions need to be stated better and more in depth, or that people should let go of their preconceived notions of how the challenges should be met, and stop throwing up the DNMC card just because you think bokeh (or whatever) means something different. If the photo falls in line with the parameters of the challenge description wording, then it does meet the challenge, period.

Based on the description, just about every photo posted in this thread would meet the challenge.

Then again, this is just a newbies humble opinion.

i just felt like this needed to be said... again.

as I look through the Framing pix it looks like a lot of people used Bokeh technique... is this a pretty common technique? (yep, newbie here)

Nanook of the north is what came to my mind and don't eat that yellow snow.

The Snickers commercial always comes to my mind first, Mr. Zappa second.

I'm nearsighted and all I have to do is take my glasses off, sit in a dark room and VOILA! every little point of light becomes bokeh!
You should see my ''bokeh tree'' at Christmas time!! ha

DING DING DING for mk. I always think of the Snickers commercial with the guy painting the endzone of the football field for the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Great work, but who are the Chefs?"

"Great googly moogly!!"

Most people in the US don't even know what a googly is.

Anyone? Anyone?

No fair if you gotta look it up...

Man, I wish I had your confidence. I have one that I like a lot, but I'm not sure the bokeh is really bokeh enough, and I have one that's definately bokeh, but I'm not sure I like it as well, and I've submitted and resubmitted at least 30 times already, switching between the two.
Of course, now that I now Dr. Achoo has the ribbon sewed up, I guess it doesn't really matter....
Seriously, this is causing me way more stress than it should.

Whenever I hear the term googly I also think of an American Express commercial with Jerry Seinfeld where he is out on the pitch and takes a big swing and whiffs before he says, "That was a WICKED googly!"

I'd love to find that commercial online somewhere...

Yes, this is a good example. I don't understand why people insist on seeing light colored circles as bokeh.

In the last bokeh challenge, I entered this, showing my 70-200/F4Ls bokeh, which I thought was pretty sweet (the background is actually a brick wall):

To me, that was sweet bokeh. It got a 5.1. But I bet people would have scored this higher:

Even though I believe the ability to smooth out the light in the background of my first shot, with the 70-200/F4L, is better than my that of my Sigma 18-125 (second shot).

are these bokeh? or just shallow DOF?

That is my favorite commercial. I laugh every time. Love that phrase. Thanks for reminding me.

More than 90% of the entries received in BOKEH -1 null
are not Bokeh. A voter must know the difference in Bokeh and shallow depth of Focus. This thread is going to improve quality of entries this time !

Or it will further restrain the artistic attempts of the many, for fear of the DNMC 1's and 2's of the few!
