I am a paid member. I don't know why, but I thought I would be able to enter both "Open" challenges when a member. Now I have to pick. I am just starting at this, but can see how much fun it is, and I want to do more and more, especially this time. How do I choose "30 Seconds" or "Bokeh".

Why is it like that? Is there a logical reason.

Yup, there is... two actually.

1.) Keeps the number of entires down in any given challenge, easier to vote 100%

2.) Gives folks a choice

Just to expand a little on Kirbic's answer: Not too long ago there was only one open challenge each week. It was getting to the point that there was 4,5, even 600 entries regularly. An awful lot of folks found it to be a very daunting task to vote on such large challenges all the time. Plus, if a challenge came up that didn't inspire you, oh well, that's all there was :-) So D & L started the 2 exclusive opens. Smaller field of entries, and a choice!

Around that same time, or shortly after, they also started running the occasional second member challenge, and more frequent free studies and speed challenges. There are a lot more challenges to enter these days than say, a couple of years ago.

Ok, my little dpc patriotic speech is over :-)

Ok. I am new here and don't know the history. That makes perfect sense. I will try to vote and participate. I really like the concept an as a Web Application programmer, I really love the site layout, ease of use, and the wonderful cross-linked views of the membership/photos/equip etc. It's an awesome thing.

Gotta get back to my picture takin',

See ya later.

Oh man I am so bummed. I took perfect pics for both 30 sec and Bokeh not realizing what "exclusive" meant. I was willing to subscribe if it meant I could enter both - but alas, I have chosen 30 sec. The reasoning makes sense... but I'm still a little sad.

But by subscribing you'll still have a choice of either basic challenges, AND be able to enter the members only advanced editing challenges, so you'll be able to enter TWO per week :)
