I have set up a studio in the house and have been looking at backdrops. I have the stands and a crossbar but the price of muslin backgrounds is just more than I want to spend. I was thinking about trying to cheat a little and buy some sheets (doubled up so they don't bleed) until I can afford a good quality background. Any ideas or thoughts on this? Is this idea just really stupid or will it work until I can get something better?

I use cheap wal-mart flat sheets. No problems.

For black and white i use walmart sheets (flat, queen or king).

try //www.coleandcompany.com/ for backgrounds. I have gotten 2 from them, both painted musline, very high quality, 10x20 feet - $139 and $99 (the second one was on sale). the smaller ones are less costly - if the web doesn't have what you want call them up and ask a human (i deal with the in person)

By varying the amount of light on a BG you can control it's look, or put gels on your BG light and change the color.

You might try a paint store and look at their canvas dropsheets. You can also Paint your own canvas backdrop with them.

Muslin can be bought at most fabric stores (including one major retail chain that starts with a Wal) quite inexpensively. You can dye the muslin with fabric dye, but I prefer to dye it with latex paint mixed with water.

Thanks everyone. Here's what I found at Lowe's:

8' x 12' painters canvas - $18.95
grommets - $7.95

Now even though I have to do a little work that's still better than $109+ for a premade background. It might BE cheap but hopefully won't LOOK cheap!!

Thanks all.
