Can someone tell me what Mirror lock up is and/or what it does?

An slr has a mirror so that you can look through the viewfinder while you focus, compose, etc. That mirror then moves out of the way when you press the shutter button but that movement can cause slight motion in the camera. The mirror lock up basically locks up your mirror before the shot so that it doesn't move and jar the camera.

Mk, do you live with your fingers poised over the keyboard??

I do some astrophotography and mirror lockup comes in handy. Getting crystal clear focused shots requires absolute steadiness. When your mirror slaps up, it can introduce a little vibration. This is just another way to prevent it and increase the probability of sharp shots.
