My D70 has historically been very fast to acquire "on" status as soon as I move the switch. It has always been immediately ready to fire.

Lately, the last 2 uses, it takes about 20 seconds to "warm up" before I will get information displayed (such as battery level, aperature, shutter speed, etc.). After the initial start up delay, any other off/on selections during the photo shoot are immediate.

Any ideas on the initial delay root cause?

Maybe your battery is old. Bring yuor camera to the store to test a new one and see if it makes a difference.

Called Nikon yesterday (after a failed use in Colorado). 3 cameras have had a recall notice on them since December. D2H, D70, and N55. They will fix the electronic problem for free regardless of warranty (but only on bodies that have the problem). Not all bodies have or will have this electronics snafu. If one has already paid Nikon Service to fix it, then Nikon will reimburse the cost. The body must be shipped to Nikon direct, NOT an authorized dealer. The symptom on the D70 is for the CF card light to blink constantly when a card is inserted, or for the camera to not turn on if the CF card is removed. These symptoms result in the camera taking a long time to turn on, not turning off, locking up when on or off, etc. I do not know the symptoms for the other 2 cameras.

Will edit with a link shortly.

This is commonly called "BGLOD" -- Blinking Green Light Of Death. Google it and you will get 13,000 hits!
