Can someone give me some advice on this pic. I just can't get the picture to soften up. I'm trying to get it to look like this one - or at least close to this type of contrast.

What am I doing wrong? Here's the original:

Did I just take a crappy picture to begin with? Can it be salvaged?

You're going to have to explain just a little more. What is "layer highlights only?"

What is lens correction to vinette?

Ok, got the vignetting.

to select highlights only do ctrl+alt+~ (that's tilde) and then do a ctrl+j to layer the selection :0)
I found that it works for soft focus images to keep the darks sharp. keeps the image from looking out of focus.

edit- another tip if you want to work with shadows only just do selection> inverse

I concentrated on toning down the hot spots from the flash. Any better? I am working on an uncalibrated laptop montior right now, so forgive me if the contrast or color is off.

Jennifer, that's what I'm looking for. Thank you so much. Please tell me how you got to that point.

Sure :)
-To tone down the hotspots:
1) Select the clone tool
2) Change the mode to Darken and the opacity to 50%
3) Alt-click on an area that is exposed how you want, then click on the hotspot and it should fix it :)

-I secected the eyes with the lasso tool, feathered 2 pixels, and applied an unsharp mask
-Then in the hue/saturation selection, click the colorize box, but the hue at 34 or so and I think the saturation was somewhere around 20.

Hope that all makes sense.

Ok, now I'm torn between Southern Gentleman's post and JRalston's post.
