Thought everyone might like to read the article... this would be so cool to be part of!

Worlds Largest Photo

Pretty cool. A few years back I saw a show by Abelardo Morell at Boston's MFA. In addition to the photo's, he had a room with all the windows covered except for a very small area and a big blank wall on the other side. It was neat to walk in and after letting your eyes adjust, see the city skyline on the wall - but upside down.

A friend of mine lived in Ottawa. There is an art museum there that has a pinhole camera that you walk through as well...

Pretty cool.

More than a few megapixels equivalent... Probably a bit more than the 1Ds Mk II can capture.

Holy smokes! This is happening right under my nose - I didn't have a clue! Literally, this site is a couple hundres yards from where I work!

Go ask for a tour and take pictures of them taking the picture!

If you can stand very still for a few hours maybe you can be in the photo.

Oh I can see the conversations that this album would incur...

"oh, so what's this one of?"

"The world's largest camera."

"Oh? Where is it?"

"Right there"

"Kinda looks like a huge airplane hanger to me..."

"It is."

"I thought you said it was a camera..... next!"

"uhh ok, what's this? It's totally black!"

"Not exactly, you can see some of the camera gear in the extremely dark light conditions inside..."

"You forgot to take the lens cap off right?"

"NO! It's really dark!"

"Ever hear of a FLASH dumdum?"

"We're not allowed to use a flash inside the camera."

"That's right, a flash goes on the OUTSIDE of a camera. Besides, you mean inside the airplane hanger, warehouse thingy right? Probably because the government is so afraid of terrorists hijacking airplanes. NEXT!"

"Ok now this looks like something... It looks like a t-shirt with a pattern on it and a really boring picture of grass that's been through the wash a few dozen times?"

"No, that's the film."

"Right, someone's t-shirt is film... I've seen film, it's black and shiny. This is fabric. Moving ON!"

"Ok, finally a picture... Looks like some hills and buildings... kinda dull though... and why is it upside down?"

"All pictures are upside down... that's how the lens works, and that's what you see inside."

"Maybe on your weird camera, my camera's pictures are right side up. Besides, it's an airplane hanger... if it's really a 'camera' as you say, how come you don't have any pictures of the lens? It must be HUGE!"

"Actually, I do, it's that speck of light there..."

"No, the LENS, you know the glass thingy on the front of the camera... oh right, warehouse..."

"The lens is actually a small hole."

"OHHHH... a hole in the side of an old warehouse is a lens. Right... and that's why you spent 1500 dollars last month on that lens that is three times larger than your camera... but this 'huge camera' has a lens that's just a hole... How much did they pay for it? Really, I don't see what all the fuss is about..."

"The picture is HUGE!"

"Doesn't look so big to me... You got the picture with your camera right? Why do they need such a big camera? There aren't even any people! Silly! I've got a digital camera and I can blow the pictures up to any size I like!"

Ok, maybe that's just the discussion I would have at my house :)

I think they should put it on one of those crawlers NASA uses to move the shuttle to the launchpad and take it on tour accross the nation... that'd be sweet. :-)

Excellent reply, eschelar!

Had me rotfl, ALMOST made me laugh beer out of my nose, but it was great beer - so I contained myself. Thanks for the laugh - I needed it today!

Count, I'll see what I can do! You've got me a bit curious.

Cheers everyone. Off for the night.

"After exposing the fabric for up to 10 days..."

Hmmm...What about wind, etc? Wouldn't the "palm trees" just be a big blur?

Ok, now let's start guessing at the focal ratio...

Based on the pictures I've seen of the project - let's say the focal length is 50 feet and the aperture is 1/2 inch (gumball sized opening) - in other words, f/1200 perhaps. (I'm only guessing on the room dimensions, and presuming the "lens" opening is about 1/2 inch.) Or, f/2400 if the focal length is 100' with the same lens opening.
Kind of interesting.

I drove the base at lunch today - couldn't find the facility yet - it's a maze of old, overgrown roads on 300+ acres. No signs, at least not that I could spot today. I'll explore some more in a day or so and report back. No one to ask where building 115 is! (Let alone ask where the "camera obscura" is... "the wha....?" they'd probably say.)

Stay tuned - more info when I find the building and someone to talk to. I'd like to know more about the dimensions of the "camera". What I know so far is that the image will be about 111 feet by about 31 feet, and the "lens" opening is gumball sized. We're still missing some variables here!

Did find this:

Diagram Link

Based on that diagram, the focal length is 56 feet, aperture is 3/4 inch, so f/896 is our ratio! Wow, now THAT'S SHARP!

From the article:

"After exposing the fabric for up to 10 days, they will develop it in a huge tub made of pool siding, using 200 gallons of black-and-white developer solution and 600 gallons of fixer."

About 2 am, go sit at a marked spot on the runway and hit yourself with a flash from a flashgun. Several times i would think.

then the next 4 nights, sit in the chair in a nother spot and use no light or little maybe - you can be in the image twice!

How did you get in there? Is it open to the public? That must be a neat experience driving around in there. I used to love their airshows.

Great idea, only one hitch though... Those things move at like 1/2 kph or something right?

So the news announcement would be:

The World's Largest Camera Nationwide Tour - Coming to your state SOON! or in 2054, if you call that soon..."

heh. j/k
