This is ganna be a hard dessision.

Lots of talk about what constitutes bokeh in this thread. I conclude that the circles, hexagons, and donuts are considered to be a higher form of bokeh than a merely out-of-focus background. How about some of you gurus offering help and advice in acheiving those little circles instead of disputing what is bokeh, please. Something more useful than just going out and buying an expensive lens. How is it done?

I'm not a guru but I'm always looking at the OOF background while using manual focus. You don't need an expensive set up to do this either.

Put your camera in manual focus mode and just play with it. With some of the P & S cameras you may need to use macro mode as well.

50mm f1.8 :-) Nice perty bokeh.

OK seriously, bokeh are best produced by brightly lit backgrounds. Bokeh are basically highlights (or ponts of light) that turn into a disc. The more shallow you can get your DoF the larger the disc will be.

So Bokeh or No Bokeh?

Wazz, I only see like one really prominent boken in that image. It's right above her right (my left) shoulder. There is another less prominent one in the top left corner of the pic. Gonna need more highlights in the background, I believe.

So you're in the camp of the Circle of light. :-P

I think there will be 2 distinct camps. One for OOF blurred Fore/background and the second that requires circles of OOF light.

Gonna be a tough crowd either way huh?

Well bokeh ARE the points of light, a blurred background is just shallow DoF.

This shouldn't be too hard. I seem to have a real talent for taking pictures that have nothing *but* bokeh. :)

That's the crux of this biscuit isn't it. I have googled and I still get those 2 distinct views.

Bokeh
"A term derived from the Japanese word for "fool" which when applied to a lens refers to the pleasing quality of the out of focus areas of an image produced by the lens. Thought to be related to factors like the shape of the aperture opening and spherical aberration."

Bokeh
"(from the Japanese boke ‚ڂ¯, "blur"[1]) is a photographic term describing the subjective aesthetic qualities of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens. For example, causing an out-of-focus background image may reduce distractions and emphasize the primary subject.

Well, here's how I see it. You're not gonna get the discs without having a blurred background, so either way, if you have the discs, you've satisfied both "camps" :-) No DMNC for you... hehe

So one of my first entrys is a bokeh! isn't it?

06/14/2006 07:31:14 PM · #95
I'm confused. Bokeh or just shallow depth of field?

There's a little bit of bokeh happening in highlights though probably not enough to be worthy of a challenge dedicated to bokeh.

Maybe a little in the upper lefthand corner.

Would this count. I want to make sure before I go shooting something for the challenge only to discover that I did some small thing wrong. I think from the examples and the descriptions that this is what it is.

I think mine is just shallow dof.

... made the thumbnail clickable

I would say no to bokeh in that one. Look at the examples throughout the thread, especially the ones with light circles in them. There's a couple of excellent examples (one with a lightbulb and one with a wine glass). Others too, those are just the ones I recall.
06/14/2006 07:51:26 PM · #100
how do you achieve this effect? Is it a lighting technique?

Is it the circular spots or the blurry background that I am shooting for?
