Hi all...back again for some more advise. I'm looking to get a circular polarizer filter for my Oly E500 but there are so many brands out there. Is one better than another? I don't have a big budget either.

Thanks in advance.

Great question! I am planning on buying a polarizer as well. I will be very interested to see the responses to this!

regardless of brand:

look for multicoated - this helps reduce flare

Hoya and B + W both have different grades of filters with prices to match. Price also varies with size. To save money buy the filter for the lens with the largest opening and then get step-up rings for the other lenses.

I don't know about Tiffen, but my experience with tiffen is the structure isn't very good (glass loose in ring) - could be just my copy.

How bout Kenko? Any good?

The only thing Kenko I have are extension tubes so can't speak for the filters.

Others will surely pipe in though.

I prefer B+W. They use high quality brass rings and great GLASS (not plastic). I have found great deals on ebay. Like others have said go for multicoating, and I suggest thin mounts in case you ever use it on a wide angle. You'll lose the front threads, but you seldom stack a filter on a polarizer. If you think you could possibly be in harsh environments go for Kaesemann incased filters, as they are sealed to the ring.

Other brand choices would be Nikon, Hoya's top of the line filters, and Sigma just introduced a new line of premium multicoated filters.

Stay away from Tiffen. Years ago they were some of the best, and now they produce junk. Theiy just bank on name recognition. I'd pass on off brands such as Quandary (sp?) also.

edit: typos
