this is just a random thought i'm having, i'm through college and in grad school and will have no chance at taking photo classes for at least the next 3 years. Is it possible for someone to get good enough to put together good amateur photos without ever going far in schooling with it. I mean i'm not trying to be pro at all. but i really really enjoy photography and this site is great becasue i'm not doing it alone anymore and i get critique for my work and some great advice. what does anyone think i know schooling is the a very good way, but is it imperative?

If you become an fairly active member, this site will serve as a pretty damn good school.

No, it's not imperative. Far from it. I was a respected professional photographer (architectural) for 25 years and never took a class in photography. IN that time, I actually TAUGHT photography at UCSD and in Zone System workshops, so anything's possible. If you have the desire and the vision, you can do it.

Schooling has never actually been a requirement for good performance.

Some of the greatest achievements have been accomplished by those who were not schooled to high levels...

One example I always like to pull out of my hat is the Niagara Falls Power Generator which was built on a design that Nikolai Tesla came up with before he was 10 years old. It provides power for millions and has been running for decades.

There are plenty of others who did amazing things with education levels that come nowhere near what the average high school student (not counting American students :) has today...

Photography is an art form... The only things you can learn from a school are the technical parts of how to get certain things right...

The artistic part has to come from within you. And that cannot be learned in any school.

I believe photography is more about creativity and expression than anything else. Not something you can read a book and become "qualified" like other professions.
