I've only entered 2 images I edited on my laptop and both did very dismally! Both didn't even make the average for the challenges.
When I got home, for some reason I wanted to pull this image.
But when my 10th vote registered, someone chose it as a fave. Thanks for letting me keep my image in the challenge ;)
I thought the shot was decent yet 50 votes under 5 tells me otherwise. I never shoot self portraits and don't really know how. Maybe some tips on how to setup the shot? Comment away if you can on the image. I have thick skin and that's how I learn ;)
Cheers.
Rikki

I like that image as well. Beautiful color and a great setting. I gave it an 8.

Calibrate your laptop, easy to do with the Colorvision Spyder. I think the reason it kinda tanked is the blue mountains which look artificially over-saturated. 5.5 is NOT that bad... |

not to mention you've got all 7+ images on your front page, I think you're doing fine as far as that goes... lol
but I suppose you're asking about this particular photo... Well, first of all, this challenge was a pretty low scoring challenge to begin with, I mean the blue ribbon barely made a 7.
My personal opinion is that most voters had this sort of idea in their head about what an empty room with a "thing" in it was supposed to look like, and unfortunately most people weren't picturing a calm/serene picture of an open-type room with a beautiful view and a person sitting in it.
I think this photo is awesome, I love the charred black color of the rock and the pretty colors of your clothes and the landscape outside. I just think it wasn't cut out for mainstream DPC voters in this challenge, as they would say. This challenge was just a tough one, with almost zero room for out of the box
but I still like your self portrait, I think it's fine, must be coincidence or something, chin up Rikki! : ) |

hey thanks guys. i wasn't complaining about the scores. actually i think i deserved it as i fully knew what i was getting into when i started editing on the laptop. no biggie ;)
to those who do SP, maybe some tips? not that i'll be showing my mug anytime soon ;) hehehehehe!
to doctornick: yeah i did calibrate it with a spyder (i have one) but it's still the pits. i don't know why. it's a tablet pc. would that be the case?
in any event, that would be the last one edited on that machine... to think i've only had it for about 4 months :)

I didn't understand the problem here... This is not a joke is it?
I mean like my sister... she gets A+ s strait... one day she gets A or B+, and tells me that she thinks she has to stop brushing her teeth at 9pm, and go back to 8:30 pm... she complains she lost 30 minutes sleep and got "bad" score in class.
I don't get it!

Naah, I think my laptop performs better than I do :D
makes some 7s once in a while :)
Have you printed any photos processed on your laptop ? I find the print is similar to what I see on my laptop which was never calibrated |

One day...jump online and I will give you some pointers in that area....it is a bit hard to write it down but easier to answer questions.

Actually, I'm seeking advice from those who do SPs a lot. I am looking for techniques, etc. as I've hardly ever done them. |

I left you my 10 cents worth. I had another 6 or 7 cents I could have added after that, but decided against it :-) |

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that processing on a laptop was not the issue with either image. The fact the 10th voter made this one a favorite is evidence of that.
Both images look, for all intents and purposes, like they are images of opportunity not necessarily taken for their respective challenges, especially the Seattle one.
Even when well processed such images are rarely rewarded with high scores.

hmm... with the few self portraits I've done, I've noticed that a mirror helps me to make myself look like (pose) how I see it in my head.
also, if you're using wireless remote, great! if not, make sure the self timer is set to give you enough time
lol, sorry, that's all I got, not very experienced here |

Yeah I agree Steve. It just so happens that both images edited there tanked although the color rendition on my laptop is quite different than when I see it on my LCD monitor. The highly saturated blue sky is great proof ;) Hehehehe. I prefer orange and reds rather than blues ;) |

speaking of which (colors):
how do you get these colors? were those actually there when you took these? if so, I wish I had sunsets like that around here

Sadly, we have no way of knowing that for certain. It could very well be that the person adding this image as a favorite may have done so because they were familiar with the location, and same brought back fond memories... or the selection is based on some other justifiable reason which may or may not have anything to do with the quality of the image.
Regarding this particular image, I gave it a 5 for a variety of reasons, all of which have already been mentioned in the comments portion of the assessment, as well as in this thread.
I certainly do not wish to offend you Rikki, but this was not one of your best images, and was lacking the crispness and flair of execution normally associated with higher scoring images.
