You can only imagine the news coverage that we're seeing in Pittsburgh right now... our beloved Steelers quarterback was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash just a bit ago.

Every station is covering it non-stop... he apparently suffered serious head injuries and is in surgery right now. Not a good day for the Steelers nation.

I had a chance to photograph him with groups of students a few weeks ago, and found him to be extremely personable. He's a good guy in addition to being a heck of a football player. Here's to hoping for the best for him...

Alan-- you must be getting alot better local coverage, cause Espn2 on the world cup halftime show said he was stable and being treated for cuts on his forehead.

saw that on the world cup scroll at bottom of espn2. I like the guy. Hope all is well. Reminds me of the Jayson Williams (Duke/Chicago Bulls) accident a few years ago.

I do hope he recovers, but my sympathy is tempered a bit by the fact that he absolutely refused to wear a helmet despite lectures and warnings from (at least) Cowher and Bradshaw. :-(

Terrible news Alan. Here's hoping for a full recovery. As a motorcyclist myself, I know full well the risks we take.

THIS SUCKS! I'm a Steelers fan and a motorcyclist as well. Kind of unfortunate that he'll wear a helmet on the field but not on a cycle?!?!?!!

Hope he pulls through this.

Edit to add news story:

No Helmet!

Well, somewhat surprisingly, the three major TV stations here have gone back to their regular programming. Any time Ben (or anyone else from the team) farts, it makes the news here, so you can imagine that this will be a huge story for a long time to come.

They had a very brief statement from a doctor at the hospital just a bit ago, saying that he's in serious but stable condition. They haven't released any additional information, so I'm curious where the other news outlets are getting their information about being treated for "scratches," or whatever.

They said that he was coherent and talking after the accident, so that's good news anyway. Granted, he thought he was the Queen of England, but still...

thanks for the 'news' Alan....I'll look to you for updates....

I hate to hear this. Really makes me sick. I'm so sorry this happened. He wasn't wearing a helmet-?- as some of the reports are saying. I hope and pray he recovers quickly.

Nope... no helmet. Not the brightest of decisions, given his status.

We had a radio talk host (John Cigna of KDKA) who used to be a big advocate of getting rid of helmet laws in Pennsylvania. He was always talking about how it should be the decision of the rider.

Then he wound up in an accident, and the fact that he was wearing a helmet likely spared his life. Seems that his position on the helmet laws have changed rather dramatically since then! I have a feeling this accident may just change Ben's mind, too.

For the record, it is legal to ride in Pennsylvania without a helmet -- that law was changed just a few years ago.

It's legal to ride in Wisconsin without a helmet as well. Given that Harley is based here, I doubt we'll ever have a helmet law, and honestly I don't want one.
I nearly never ride without a helmet (basically only to test-ride if I need to listen carefully to the bike) but I don't think we need to legislate stuff like this.

An early, unconfirmed report is saying he lost many of his teeth, broke a bone in his sinus cavity, has a 9" laceration at the back of his head... and severely injured both knees in the fall from the car.

Things sounded fairly ok until I heard about the knees, which he already had plenty of trouble with during the season. Ouch.

ESPN just scrolled that the surgery was for a broken jaw..

06/12/2006 04:24:52 PM · #17
Yeah, that was in the list, too... I forgot to include that in what the report said. The knee injuries are a bit of a mystery so far. One newspaper says he severely injured his knees, yet witnesses saw him briefly stand up after the accident (and then he collapsed). Who knows.

Makes me wonder why the team/hospital, etc., can't just be open about what has happened. Instead, it seems like they take some sort of joy in being secretive about the whole thing. Why let everyone speculate about the whole thing instead of just saying what his injuries were?

I find that to be really annoying... perhaps I'd feel differently if I knew what their reasoning is for keeping everything hush hush like that.

part of that would be the HiPPA laws...

It's not uncommon for sometimes serious injuries not to be noticed by the person in the heat of a crash.

Sounds like - could be wrong - injuries that would be mostly avoided/minimised by a full-faced helmet. I grew up with my father owning a motor bike dealership and I wouldn't touch anything other than a full-faced helmet. :-/ Yeah, I know - not as much fun normally.

Hope it works out.....

What are you talking about? That's his happy face. :-)

Yea...I heard rumors of it at school...I live in pittsburgh and it was confirmed when i got out. One kid was actually crying...Thats the burgh for yah. But anyway the Jason Williams crash was a little differnt...He had it in his contract that he was not aloud to ride a motorcycle. As sad as I am what an idiot for not wearing a helmet...As for the guy that hit him, i am just waiting to hear that he has been shot to death by a crazed steeler fan (i.e everyone in pittsburgh)

P.S. The current status last i heard was a broken jaw, and he will be fine in 7 weeks. At least he didnt land on that damn hand of his.

I gather from this thread that his hands and knees are vital, but his head is expendable. Like, "Ooohh... good thing he hit head first and broke his entire face instead of his wrist!" :-/

Hey buddy, we're football fans... don't try to force logic on us! :P

It makes me sad (and a little mad) that anyone rides without a helmet, but for someone in his position to do so is simply insane. I like Roethlisberger but he really screwed up this time.

What exactly is his position? a fun lovin' 24 year old, who enjoys riding his bike within the law of the commonwealth he lives?

Now that i have pissed a number of people let me say that i don't think he owes anyone an explaination but himself. He has spoke about his hobby of riding the bike and he obviously knew the risk he was taking. I myself will never ever get on one of those things just like i won't touch a gun either but I really object to telling other people what they should or shouldn't do.
