I planned a 5 week phototrip with a buddy, we planned to shot only landscapes in Croatia and Norway.

From before I had bought a 1D MkIIn, mostly for sport photography and also portraits. I brought this camera to Costa Rica in December, and tried to shot landscapes. Unfortunately I managed to drop the 1D MkIIn and 17-40mm into the water, it was submerged for a little while before I managed to get it up. The camera was not damaged, and I could continue using it. Shooting landsacpe with 1.3x crop factor was difficult, and I decided to buy another camera, a 5D.

Bought the 5D just a couple of days before Patrick arrived in Norway, and didn't have time to add it to my insurrance policy(dumbass).

Anyhow, 'bout two weeks into our trip I managed to do it again.. I was out on the water setting up my gear when I suddently slipped on a rock, and the 5D and 17-40mm barely went under for less then half a second.

I immidiatly ripped out the battery and CF, and started drying it off.
I left the camera inside my car with the fans on max over night while camping, the next morning I tried to power-on the 5D only to notice it was dead.

Quickly shipped it to Canon Service, only to find out Canon could not fix it, the cost would surpass the initial cost of buying a new one.

My insurrance company would not have any part of it, and I was stranded far up north in Norway without any camera, the 1D I left at home (dumbass).

Being we were not even half way with our trip, costs involved with travelling, etc. I decided to buy a new 5D and continue our trip.

IF I had the chance of going back in time, I would have bought the 1Ds MkII instead of the 1D MkII and two 5D's.

That's how clumbsy one can be, this is an very expensive hobby. :-|

That is my main reason I haven't upgraded to a DSLR yet (well that and I really can't justify it when I have so many bills outstanding). I am afraid of the fact that really you can't have just one lens. I worry about having to (well wanting more than needing) buy more and more equipment when I really can't afford it.

Also that break aspect of it. Even though it wasn't cheap and I'd be totally lost without it, if I drop and break my p&s I think I'd be ok, or I could get a cheap replacement without too much worry about loss in quality. Where as if I have an expensive DSLR and lens that gets broken or stolen then I'd have to go back to p&s at great disappointment.

Ummm, I know it looks goofy and stuff, but given your track record, I highly recommend that you use a neck strap. :)

The hobby isn't that expensive. Clumsiness is.

dang - I only wish I could afford one 5D .... no way I could afford to even replace my 20D right away without the insurance I have on it.

Good call, I've started using it more! It also depends some when, cause I often fall down cliffs, hills etc also.. and then it's good to have the camera resting on a tripod. :)

I'm such a clums.
