Pretty disappointed overall. There were 2 standouts for me and several in the higher category, but lots of snapshots in my opinion.
People aren't liking mine much either. ha ha So much for trying to be artful.

Man! I'm in the toilet on this one.
The challenge description said to "Creatively capture a shadow...". Think I was too creative for my own good. ;^)

this is good for me. i LOVE this pic but it is an artsy interpretation with out a dark "stand out" shadow subject. I did go out shooting with the intention of capturing a shadow though so i didnt just throw any old picture in. i hope people dont think that. so i'm happy with this. i do wonder how well it would do in a free study though. |

I don´t know if I can call my self new here, been here for almost 7 weeks... But, there is one thing that I have not gotten used to, is it something that is possible to get used to or??? Sometimes when your pictures are being voted on you get (or at least I get) comments saying, overburned... when you have not burned it at all, or to much cropping or.... don´t know, some comments that people would not put there if they had the information about the picture.. In the Shadow III
I got one comment saying.. looks unreal, like the subject was placed there afterwards?? And the vote was either 1 or 2... I just bought this new lens which has a small DOF and did try it out for this challenge (actually am pleased with the results).
My point is, it really hurts when you get comments on your pictures that you would not get if the voters new better??? Is this something you get used to as challenges go by, or will it always hurt???
Hm, just wondering :o)

Sorry to have to say this, but you better get used to all kinds of comments. I have been very lucky, seldom get the nasty ones, but it happens. It will only get you down.
I have a shot in Unexpected find and of the 10 comments I have already, there is one that does not fit in with the others :) that's for sure ... It's sort of unexpected .......

Don't take those things too seriously. They are only trying to help. If somone says you overburned when you did not they just mistook it for some other post processing adjustment or it was underexposed. That is no big deal.
Images need to stand on their own, without explanations. If it requires an explanation then chances are the image is missing something. And never discount the fact that something you try in a picture just might not work.

I'll add to this by stating that the voter needs to "get it" really fast before they vote and move on. My 3 comments on not seeing shadows (and terrible score)is proof of that. Either that or my picture is really bad and I haven't learned anything since I've been here. |

I think some people go through the entries with the mindset of finding something negative. Giving a critique does not mean the critique has to be negative. Most comments are postive and/or constructive. Some are totally off base or they question an element of the photo that was obviously intentional. Like saying "no shawdow detail" on a shiloette, or "Out of focus" about an element that was obviously intended to be out of focus. Or in your case, "looks burned" on an element that was intentionally dark.
If you are truly creative people will not get your work every time. If everyone understnds your intentions 100% of the time then you're not pushing the creative process IMO. That can be frustrating, but occassionally you'll hit on one that most people can indentify with.
Of course there is always the people who make themselves feel better by knocking other people's work. You can't avoid them no matter where you go.

Well, you are probably right.. :o)
But the reason it hurts is that maybe you get a few "good" comments on your picture (and usually one only sends in pictures one thinks is "good")... and then you get the ones that you feel your picture does not deserve :o) and those comments can be "harsh"... when you are really trying your best :o( Like.... doesn't´t appeal to me - 1 or do not like the angle you use - 2 ???
I really like getting comments, specially from someone who really looks into the picture and if he/she can give you some constructive comments then good, if they just like the picture then ok, if they do not like the picture then ok, but telling you what is wrong with it out of ones oppinion...hm... well, I will continue trying my best and thanks :o) |

Question on comments. I don't have enough photographic knowledge to give great comments so when I comment I tend to just say what it is I like or dislike about the image. Should I refrain from commenting until I can be consturctive and advise? |

I think that what you do and do not like is just as constructive as the Martian language of f-stops and PhotoShop terminology. All the tech-speak in the world matters not if the photo doesn't have any appeal, after all.

I can't believe my score! I'll post the score once I get to 100 votes so that I feel like it won't go to far from where its at, but right now it is looking like a personal best!

No...just say "in a nice way" what you like and/or dislike about the photo.

Thanks Tim, I really liked my shot and thought it would do well and was just hoping to have it added to my top 6 and didn't expect the score I'm getting. And I have abunch of time off this week from work and I fear that I will get nothing done around the house as I will be glued to DPC all week...

Tim, it looks like you've got me again, but I am currently on the good side of 6, which will do me just fine, thanks. :-)
And sounds like Aimee will take the household championship in this one, huh? |

I hear ya - I am a stay at home dad and this week has been brutal with the update button. Laundry piling up, dishes in the sink, kids havent bathed all week. I think I know where both of them are though. Give us a peek into that score when you feel comfortable about it.

You know Aimee wanted my shot but had to go to work. So instead she gets a better shot - lol. She hasnt entered anything in a while (a while being a week off) but she has been on a 6.+ roll. She has the update addiction going on this week. And you being on the good side of 6 doesnt count you out on beating me for sure. You just never knwo when the tides will turn. |
