Giving the enemy a morale boost in the time of war is a little more than voicing ones opinion.
He even admitted being stupid.

Okay.. let's not blame America for this one too. He acted on his own, and admits he was wrong and is embarrassed by it, but if I act like a bafoon in my job, they are liable to let me go too.. whether it be an American, German, Norweigan, etc. company. He burned his own bridge. The US didn't do that to or for him, and he knows it. Let's let him struggle with this on his own. |

Ok he made mistakes but he was fired for this!
"NBC says it has severed its relations with the veteran reporter after he told Iraqi television that the US war plan against Saddam Hussein had failed"
This is actually true it is not going to plan USA hoped it would be over quicker as we all did, isnt freedom of speech about reporting the truth?
After all Antithesis isnt it blatently obvious its not going to plan?
NOTE: i personally wish it was going to plan for the usa albiet i oppose the war. |

In a job where judgement and accuracy of reporting factual information are of paramount importance, evidence of a severe lack of judgement and the loss of objectivity (ie expressing ones' own opinions through an interview for competing/hostile networks) is grounds for dismissal, I would say. You relinquish some of your right to free speech when you're getting paid to speak for NBC.

LONDON (AFP) Apr 01, 2003
Award-winning news correspondent Peter Arnett, sacked by the American TV network NBC after suggesting on Iraqi television that the US war plan had failed, has joined the Daily Mirror -- the British newspaper most opposed to the conflict.
Fired by America for telling the truth... Hired by Daily Mirror to carry on telling it," read the headline on the tabloid's front page Tuesday.
"I report the truth of what is happening here in Baghdad and will not apologise for it," Arnett told the daily.
"I have always admired your newspaper and am proud to be working for it."

The trouble with this story -- which basically reflects badly on the US for its failure to be able to take criticism like an adult -- is that it concerns that idiot, Arnett, who made himself into Saddam's pet in '91 and later. While the story is important, it will lose its edge because of the character involved.
The more entertaining story is that of Geraldo Riviera being kicked out of Iraq by the US military because he outlined a future attack during a report. Gerlado says it (presumably "it" is his own stupidity) is all a plot by his previous employers, MSNBC!

I'm glad NBC fired Peter Arnett, now we should deport him back to New Zeland as well. :D
It's not his job as a journalist to state his opinion on Iraqi TV, it's to report the news, and I'm glad they got rid of him. He's basically a commi-mole from another country who lives in the US. The USA should put him on trial for Saddition if he ever dares to show his ugly mug back in the USA. |

Not suggesting that he is one, but the nice thing about the US is that you actually have the right to be a communist if you so wish.

Well NBC is free to fire him as well, and he got what he deserves since it's unethical to INVENT news like was doing. Hoogie, I'd say your friend Arnett is pretty free given that if he said the same thing only AGAINST Iraq he would be executed 5 minutes later by the Iraqi government. |

Actually, you're mistaken. Every democracy that I know of has a communist or ultra-socialist organisation...in the States, Canada, Britain, and in New Zealand. Do a search for the Communist Party of New Zealand. They don't ever get many votes in any of these places, but they're there.

Peter "Benedict" Arnett should be arrested, tried for treason, and when found guilty taken to Guantanimo Bay and shot by a firing squad...

what is a shame is that during world war II the farmboys from New Zee were some great fighting men... fighting for freedom... and fighting hard in the south pacific.. along with the aussies... they were great and valued allies of the US and freedom for the world...
it's ashame how many of their offspring have become nothing but socialist sheep...

Well in WWII if a "journalist" like him was around that's probably exactly what would happen to him. But unfortunetely, today, that would be insensaaaative to his needs to aid the enemy. You'd have an NYU lawyer defending him with the "twinky defense" or something. Don't you love liberism? :D
Don't worry times is changing, slowly but surely. :)

Anyone who thinks that any news reporting, by any news agency in the world, is not bias or even extremely coloured, is sadly mistaken.
News is managed and controlled, that is called editorial policy in most news bureaus. In times of war, the policy is usually adjusted to suit the demands of the viewers, the government of favour, the optimum revenue stream, and the opinions of the management. If you have the opportunity to compare a single story, as reported by various agencies from various countries, it becomes very obvious and plain to see the distortions.
Arnett is no different than many others who gain their own fame and notoriety from their stories - for example: Walter Cronkite in World War II and later as a celebrity anchor (That's The Way It Is...but from who's perspective?), Arthur (the Stud Scud) Kent, in Desert Storm (who used extremely long zoom lenses to bring the war much closer in the scene to him to create and heighten the drama), Sam Donaldson (who foolishly reported American troop positions during Desert Storm), Dan Rather in Afghanistan with the Mujahideen, who years ago sneaked into the Russian war zone and reported the atrocities against the leaders of the country(he later reported the opposite viewpoints when the USA invaded after the Russians gave up), and many, many more.
The story is suppose to be the focus. But, in this day of instant media, it is difficult not to confuse the reporter with the story that they report. CNN hyped the hell out of Arnett in the last Middle East War, they made him a star. They packaged and sold him to the viewers as the best and most reliable source of information.
Arnett was simply very foolish and made a major journalistic mistake - he forgot for whom he was working. He forgot about his viewers. Full stop. IMHO

CNN is garbage. Don't watch that channel. They are more interested in showing children in the hospital (which is tragic) which was a mistake, rather then showing the many US soldiers who were executed on the spot with their pants pulled down around their ankles, which was NOT a mistake.

More then foolish, he's done this before. He has a long history of it and should be put on trial for Saddition (aiding the enemy in time of war) when he returns. That'll send a message to other "foriegners" like him to play by our rules or don't come to this country. You can't hide behind the ACLU anymore. :)
