An early Happy b-day Samantha!
I've gotta echo what a few others have said; get the extension tubes. With your existing 50mm, you will have a lot of flexibility. The only thing you really lose is the ability to focus to infinity (or even beyond a couple feet) with the tubes in place. But it's a very good compromise, still. You'll get excellent image quality.

Looks like my best option is extension tubes for my 50mm. :D

And of course, Laura, you can borrow them. :)

I'll have to agree with this. I have the Quantaray 'version' of that lens (just a rebadged EX non-DG) and I'm pretty impressed with how sharp it is. The working distance is a little too close for insects and such though.

ANother vote for the Sigma 50mm macro... for around US$250, it is an excellent lense.

Here are some reviews from Fred Miranda of the lense. I own the Sigma 105, which I really like. Another plus, it is a sharp lense for doing portraits.

Good luck, whatever you may end up getting.

A British magazine did a comparison between the most popular macro lenses from various brands and the Canon 100 2.8 macro was deemed the best one of the lot. I have one and I love it.
