OK, so when I bought my d70, I got the year's worth of warranty from Ritz Camera -- which basically covers it no matter what, even if you drop it in a creek and run it over with your truck. That was an extra $168...

Now, it's going to expire in a couple of weeks and I got the renewal notice in the mail. They want $209 to renew it. I just can't decide if it's worth it. I mean for like $700, you can buy a d70s or I'm sure there are used d70 bodies in mint condition floating around for a lot cheaper than that...

Anyway, what would you do?

skip it
for ~200$USD you can get an all inclusive insurance policy that willcover all your equipment - it will include mysterious disapearance / theft / *stupidity & etc

though it has caveats as well (they dick around with your home owners policy if you claim ...)

or look for a business policy which covers everything (but has a deductable ..)

i went for the business policy 20k of coverage this year 210$ CND
will cover everything except *stupidity & mysterious disapearance
...i have hopes of selling but haven't sold a thing ...

*(not a insurance term but you probably understand ...)

If your D70 breaks beyond economical repair at this point in time you will be getting the D70s. We had a guy a couple weeks back who fell into the bay with his D70. It was replaced with the D70s.

Flat out the plans are worth it.

Clara, yeah I hear you...the only thing is though that when I think about the long-run, it becomes less worth it...

Let's say I were to go ahead and extend the warranty for two years...how about 3 years...now I just bought myself a second body...I just don't really know if it's worth it.

I mean I do like the peace of mind in knowing that if I break it, it's not going to matter, and I enjoy the ease of cleaning my sensor with a piece of tape and not worrying if anything is going to break, but I just don't know.

I'm going to check out what Ralph is saying about the whole insurance thing...then decide.

My experience with extended warranties has been that the salespeople find every reason in the world to sell them to you, and then find every reason not to honor them when something happens. I've never gotten one from Ritz, so I can't speak to how things go there (I'll take Clara's word for it :)

So unless you're in the habit of dropping your camera in the creek and running it over with your truck, I'd say spend the money on something better... like buying me a present!

Hey Deapee, did you know that there is a firmware upgrade D70 to D70s available on Nikon's site? You download it, transfer it to a card and go to update fimware on the camera's menu.

Apparently it is quite a major fix for a whole lot of stuff

I know Brett, I've had that installed for quite a while, thanks though...

I was just referring to the cost of having to replace the d70 should it somehow end up under a vehicle's tire or something...and being that I can't find a reputable place selling a d70 I just mentioned the price of the s. Again, thanks though.

The Ritz warranty has so far saved:

- A Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens. Fell out of backpack. Fixed free of charge.

- A Canon 20D which mysteriously stopped working 10 minutes into an engagement shoot.

I have the warranty on my new 5D, but since the 20D is no longer my main camera, I let it expire on that one.
