How are you guys doing, i'm hoping a more experienced sport photography can help someone who's just starting out. I want to get some practice with sports, but I don't know how i should go about this. Like i'm assuming I just don't come to a field unannouced pull out my camera and start shooting (especially because the fields around me are generally all kids playing sports) i mean kids could be good for practice, they're slower and easier to focus. Should I ask the coaches or parents for permission to shoot, or how could I do this? I want to practice but don't want to piss anyone off. I would appreciate any insight from a more experienced photographer.
thanks

Is there a local league or maybe a stadium in your area that has management or somebody in charge? I went to a local velodrome and just offered to give them copies of my pictures in exchange to get into events free of charge and practice shooting. |

Hi Damien,
I did pretty much like 'Kyebosh'...contacted the local sporting clubs and told them exactly who I was, what I was planning and why. Then also offered them copies of the shoot so they could use any of the shots for the club magazine etc.
I had great reception and as one of the organizers stated "The fact the I was totally up-front with them got me the free pass for the season."
Several of the riders and their parents have also bought a few of my shots as well...so that really makes it a win - win all round.
Good luck

I appreciate the fast responses, I was thinking on just shooting some soccer and lacrosse games around where I live to get the practice in. I live in Philly and there's a ton of rec centers around here that won't charge anyone anything to watch. I just wasn't sure if I should contact the coaches and the parents before because they are usually youth teams and I don't want to offend anyone. So while there is not a place where people would pay admission I am starting to think that being up front with the coaches and offereing them copies of prints or the digitals on a cd the following week would be the best thing. Thanks for the response again.
