I keep getting comments on this image asking about the "purple circle" in the center. To tell the truth, I did not notice it until others pointed it out; I suspect it's more visible on an LCD screen, maybe?

Anyway, I thought about it and decided it must be an artifact left over from my gradient. I laid in a gradient of color-to-transparent down from the top, and I suspected it did funny things with the color in the area where it was semi-transparent. But I went back to look at the original, and it seems to be present there as well, just more subdued. The increased color saturation alone might account for it, I don't know. Here's the unaltered original:

Could it be lens flare?

I suppose it might be a very diffused lens flare, yes. That's an idea... The 70-200mm is extremely good about flare, but there's one noticeable flare mark at the bottom... For sure I'm shooting right into the sun here, with the hood on, and at maximum zoom.

Looks the same to me in both versions, so I don't think it's introduced in post (LCD screen).

To me, it looks like a chance alignment of the shadowed side of some wavelets.

I see it in both images, the grad probably just emphasised it. My guess is lens flare.
